The pit orchestra is an exciting opportunity for students of all grades. Students that are eager to challenge themselves with music that pushes past what is typically taught and performed in the classroom, are encouraged to join. Each year, the orchestra accompanies our spring musical with a live performance of its soundtrack. Students are chosen to join based on their skill level, willingness to practice independently, and the instruments that are required from year to year. Unfortunately, this means that there will not be an available position every year for all instruments. The orchestra is composed of HHRS students, alumni and professional musicians. This gives students the opportunity to play alongside experienced instrumentalists, and offers valuable wisdom to those that are interested in improving their skills as a musician. The musical, as a whole, participates in the Basie Awards, a Tony award-like ceremony for local high schools. The pit orchestra at Henry Hudson has been nominated twice in the last five years, taking away the award for Best Mixed Pit for Shrek The Musical in 2016.
