What is This?
High School Transition (HST) is a required 9th grade class for all 9th graders. All 9th graders will be enrolled in this class by their high school counselor.
This class focuses in on building strategies for a successful transition from middle school to high school as well as building much needed support systems that will travel through high school with the students.
It is a credit bearing class which means it will count toward overall earned credits and be calculated into GPA calculations. It will fall under the general elective category.
What Does the Class Look Like?
This year, we are following a weekly schedule of tasks/lessons to help things run smoothly during hybrid learning. This schedule will probably be followed pretty closely next year with a few slight adjustments, as needed, for learning circumstances (in person or virtual).
Mondays - Students complete a Check-In form for their HST teacher to give them feedback on how they are feeling, what they need help with for the week, and overall reflecting on things are going. Students then complete an SEL lesson and activities surrounding that lesson.
Tuesdays - Students complete a Tune-In Tuesday activity that has a focus on the science material being taught in their science classes (review, preview, or remediate) that also brings in some practice with various literacy strategies.
Wednesdays and Thursdays - Students are working independently on what they need to accomplish to keep up with current classwork or get caught up on old classwork (for HST or other classes). HST teachers will also use these days to hold one-on-one student/teacher conferences with students to meet with them about their grades, their weekly check-in, etc. to make sure they are moving in the right direction.
Fridays - Students will complete their weekly grade analysis and reflection where they will pull up current grades and track where they are going (good or bad) and make efforts to goal set for the coming week to get back on track or stay on track academically.
What is SEL?
SEL (Social Emotional Learning) has become a strong focus within Henry County Schools over the last few years. We are currently in our 2nd year of our partnership with School Connect which provides great SEL lessons and supplemental materials for our students and teachers.
Students will be practicing skills that will help them in school, higher education, the workforce, and just life in general. Our students have loved this curriculum over the last two years and really do look forward to what lessons are taught each week.
We encourage parents to get involved, as well! Most of our students find it fun to go home and teach their parents about the skills they learned in their weekly SEL lessons.
