Tūhono Kapa Haka Competition

CHRISSY CALDER — DEC 2, 2022

Last weekend our Tūhono Kapa haka group travelled to the Town Hall for the Tūhono Competition for intermediate schools.

Our excited group got ready at our kura with the help of some staff and parents. We ate together and had a last-minute practice. Then it was time to get on the bus.

We were the 4th group to go on. The previous groups had inspired us, and we gave it everything we could with the following awesome results:

Rehua Marae Visit for Matariki

On the 25th of June a number of our Kapahaka students visited Rehua Marae and performed a selection of the waiata and haka we have been working on since the start of the year. This was warmly recieved by those who were in the audience. There were many other things to see and experience at the marae including eating kai and seeing some of the traditional arts and crafts in the whare nui. It was a great experience for all those involved. Below are some photos and videos from our experience.

Hareruia

Ka koingo, ka mahara ki te mauri o te Atua

E te kamaka, e te kaiwhakaora

Ka hahana te manawa, ki te ihi karangaranga

Kei toku Atua e, hareruia

Hareruia, hareruia, hareruia, hareruia!

I heard there was a secret chord

That David played and it pleased the Lord

But you don’t really care for music, do you

Well it goes like this, the fourth, the fifth

The minor fall and the major lift

The baffled king composing hallelujah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Ka koingo, ka mahara ki te mauri o te Atua

E te kamaka, e te kaiwhakaora

Ka hahana te manawa, ki te ihi karangaranga

Kei toku Atua e, hareruia

Hareruia, hareruia, hareruia, hareruia!

Haka lyrics

Ara Ngāpuhi e

‘Hakatangatanga ki runga

‘Hakatangatanga ki raro

Tēnei ngā pū, tēnei ngā hāmanu

Tihei ngā iti o Ngāpuhi e

Kohaorau

He Atua kei roto nana i tīkaro ake ki ngā maioro kokokai

Hei ka ki te Atua, hei kanapu i te rangi

Neinahanaha pohora

Neinahanaha pohora

Ngāpuhi e!

Lyrics for It's a long way, till tomorrow

Here is a song you should know

It's a long way, till tomorrow

And everything it holds

To the children as our future

We must teach them to be bold

Fathers and sons, mothers and daughters

Together as one

But here in Ōtautahi,

What a great place to learn

Mā te tika, mā te pono

Me te rangimarie

Ka tae atuā ki te taumata

Tātou, tātou e

Kai Tahu te iwi, tangata whenua

Tū kaha, tū māira

But here in Ōtautahi,

What a great place to learn

It's a long way..
