Watch our new, short guidance film - Managing Special Occasions

Bereaved families tell us that special occasions like Father’s Day can be difficult to manage. With all the build-up in the shops and in the media, it can feel like a painful reminder of how much you are missing someone important in your life.

Here are some tips for managing the day:

Talk to your friends and family so they understand how you’re feeling

Don’t expect too much of yourself

Do what feels right for you, don’t feel you have to do the same as everyone else

Make your own traditions to remember the person who has died

Get support if you need it

Our helpline is available 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday: 0800 02 888 40

My Dad and Me - a new memory book for children

Red Letter Days has partnered with Child Bereavement UK to create a very special gift for two brothers dealing with the death of their dad, and a new resource for bereaved children.

‘Magical Memories of Dad’ is co-authored by Lewis (11) and Fraser (13) who were supported by Child Bereavement UK following their father’s death in 2012. The book includes some of the boys’ treasured memories of their dad, including family holidays in Lapland, playing football in the garden, and reading their favourite stories at bedtime., all depicted with beautiful illustrations by Emma Block.

A ‘blank’ version of the book – ‘My Dad and Me’ – is available as a resource for bereaved children to document and draw their own special memories of their dad.

Grieving is not about forgetting the person who has died, but finding ways to remember them; by also producing a blank version of the book, we hope that many more young people will have a beautiful resource in which to document their unique memories of someone special who has died.
