North Preschool Teacher

Teacher Marcia

My name is Marcia True, but I have been better known as Teacher Marcia during my more than 40 year career with the Hillsborough Preschools. I attended West Hillsborough and W. H. Crocker Schools and later completed my Early Childhood Education certification which included an internship at Stanford’s Bing Nursery School.

In 1975, while attending college, I was asked by then-director Bob Bierscheid to provide child-care/play-school activities for the very young children of the Hillsborough moms that were participating in a weekly fitness class.

That one-hour weekly children’s activity proved popular with the parents and I was asked to develop and lead a more extensive preschool program which over a number of years expanded to all three district elementary schools. This development and expansion period was marked by a continuing dialog with, and input from, a series of District Superintendents, Principals and K-1 teachers to establish basic social, academic and motor-skill development goals for preschool children in order that they be well-prepared for entry into the Hillsborough schools. Today, I continually strive to adapt my curriculum to reflect and take advantage of innovation and technology–and to ensure our children are ready and eager to be full participants in their school community and the ever-evolving world in which they live.

In 2004 I was honored to receive Hillsborough’s Community Care Award and joined the fraternity of people who have been recognized for their contributions on behalf of our children.

Working with our children and their parents and collaborating with my district and campus colleagues, still gives me great joy and satisfaction.

North Preschool Teacher

Teacher Claire

My name is Claire Sanborn. I was born and raised in Wisconsin but have been living in the Bay Area for over fifteen years. I love living here!

I have education and training in Child Development, Early Childhood Education and have worked closely with children for more than twenty-five years. I have worked at North Preschool for almost ten years.

My first exposure to North was when I was a live-in nanny for a family here in Hillsborough. The kids I took care of were in the program for a total of five years. I experienced the program first from the outside and was very impressed! When it was time for me to move on from being a nanny this was the natural progression. Once I was working at North Preschool and saw the program from the inside I was even more impressed!

It has been so much fun working with Marcia. We make a good team and I've learned a lot. I find so much joy in watching the children explore, grow and learn. I'm continually growing and learning as well.

Teacher Becca

My name is Rebecca (Becca Knops), and I have been working with children since 1988. I have operated a childcare from my home, worked as an elementary school librarian technician, drove the bookmobile for San Mateo Foster City School District (SMFC) bringing libraries to neighborhoods, aided in Special Needs Preschool classes, and I have taught preschool, pre-k, tiny tots and mommy and me classes. This is currently my 12th year teaching preschool and pre-k at the West Elementary School campus for Hillsborough Recreation. I have my BA from SFSU in Child and Adolescent Development. I have served on the San Mateo chapter of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) board, served on the Literacy Board for SMFC, and I have been a mentor teacher. I have lived in the Bay Area for 52 years, and enjoy spending time with my husband, my family, friends and my pets when I am not working! Sharing a quote, I love, as I am lucky to do what I love! "If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life" by Marc Anthony.

West Preschool Teacher

Teacher Carolina

I was born and raised in Mexico City where I studied Graphic Design and cultivated my love for everything creative. I then moved to California shortly afterwards. While my eldest daughter was in pre-k and my youngest was in preschool at North Hillsborough, I volunteered by starting a Spanish program in 2001. As they continued on to North Elementary School, I was fortunate enough to expand my program to all three Hillsborough Preschools. Not only is the program still going strong but I have also started working as a TA at the West Hillsborough Preschool since 2015. My career at the Hillsborough schools began in my living room as I practiced lesson plans, sang, danced and crafted with my two daughters so long ago. I feel very lucky that I get to relive and share this initial joy with every child that I teach.
