TIPS
Review guidelines established by the school teaching in a remote/hybrid environment.
Establish communication routines with your students. Relationships are critical.
Plan for student work to take twice as long.
Be mindful of students’ cognitive load. Too many links, too much information, and/or using too many tools can overwhelm students mentally. Less can be more with learning online.
When linking to resources uploaded to Drive (e.g,. videos, images) set sharing settings to "anyone at [school] with the link can view” [e.g. inserting a video into Google slide].
A note about recording...
If your school requires you to record or you choose to record your meetings be sure to have clear guidelines on the the use and purpose of these recordings. If you are requiring your students to attend their classes in "real-time" what is the reason for recording?
Some reasons to have the recording as a resource may be:
For a student who has technical difficulties during the scheduled meeting time.
If a student is unable to participate in the event of a medical issue.
If a student is quarantined in a different time zone.
If you school has a "open door" policy were no student and teach would ever meet in alone. this would be particularly applicable during "office hour" meetings.
You will want to have policies and guidelines around the ownership and use to the recordings. What steps need to be taken before a recording is shared or made available? If it is being made available to all students, is the recording behind a secure login?
Additionally, there are laws around recording that vary from State to State regarding whether you need one or two party consent when recording. This can be achieved through either notification or written consent, and may be included in an enrollment contract or as part of policy and handbook guidelines. More information about recording laws can be found here - https://recordinglaw.com/ - and it is always recommended to consult with your school's attorney if there are any questions.
