Preparing for a meeting
Determine the purpose of the meetings. Meetings are good for:
Class discussion
Teacher check-in with small groups of students
“Office hours”
Think about how you will handle student questions and comments during the meeting — either have students type questions directly into the chat feature or indicate that they have a question in the chat and then you ask them to speak (depending on platform - Meet or Zoom).
Think about how you want students to use the chat feature (e.g., back-channel; a place for students to pose questions, share comments and respond to each other).
Chats are recorded as part of the recording process - if recording.
It’s a good idea to plug in, as video conferencing can drain your battery quickly.
Position yourself near strong wifi, in a front-lit space so everyone can see your face. If you can use a wired connection that is best.
Running a successful meeting
State the purpose of the meeting to the class.
Review these student meeting norms for behavior early and often. (Consider posting norms in your LMS.)
Communicate to students how you will handle their questions and comments.
Periodically pause and monitor the chat and then address questions. As needed, you can set up a separate document to answer questions after the meeting that you weren’t able to answer during the meeting.
Minimize your own distractions — quit unnecessary apps like messaging apps (SLACK, Messages, etc.).
Have additional web pages needed for the session open in a separate browser window from the meeting.
