Military Tuition Assistance
How Do You Get Tuition Assistance (TA)? The procedure to apply for Tuition Assistance varies according to your service and even your unit. However, your education office should have the latest information and forms you need to take advantage of this program. Prospective students must receive approval from their Educational Services Officer (ESO), military counselor, or military service prior to enrollment. The forms have to be signed by your commander and supervisor, who determine whether college courses will interfere with your duties.

Step 1: Confirm Eligibility & Get Command Approval: Complete this before applying to any school.
Meet with your Education Services Officer (ESO) or Education Counselor at your military base/portal to confirm your Military Tuition Assistance (TA) eligibility and secure approval from your chain of command.
Step 2: Apply & Gain Admission to Your Chosen School: Ensure exact school name alignment.
▪️ Please visit Kapi’olani Community College – Admission website for more information.
▪️ For students who are transferring from other UH colleges/universities to Kapi'olani CC, you need to submit a Change of Home Institution form.
Step 3: Meet with an Academic Advisor for an Approved Education Plan: Required for TA portal submission.
Connect with your academic advisor or counselor to create a formal degree plan.
You will need to schedule an appointment with your assigned Program Counselor or the VMRC Coordinator/Counselor.
During your appointment, the counselor will create a personalized degree plan for you.
Once completed, export or save the degree plan as a PDF or other official document.
Step 4: Submit Degree Plan & Request TA Approval via Military Portal: Mind your branch's specific deadlines.
Upload your approved degree plan/educational document into your service branch’s education portal (e.g., ArmyIgnitED, Air Force Virtual Education Center, Navy College Portal). Request TA approval for your intended courses within your branch's required timeframe before classes start.
Step 5: Register for Classes: Complete through your student account.
Once your TA setup/degree plan is accepted in the portal, register for your approved courses via STAR GPS Registration.
Step 6: Obtain & Submit Approved TA Voucher to Your School: Crucial step: Military branches do NOT send this automatically.
Generate or download your signed, approved TA Authorization Voucher from your military portal. Submit it directly to Cashier’s Office at Ilima 106 or via UH FileDrop
Step 7: Pay Remaining Account Balances: TA covers tuition only
Monitor your student financial account. TA funds will apply directly toward tuition costs. You are responsible for paying any remaining balances not covered by TA, such as mandatory student fees, course materials, or housing.
Step 8: Maintain Grades & Complete the Term: Automatic grade reporting.
Complete your courses. Upon term completion, your school's registrar will report your final official grades back to the Department of Defense.

Allow up to 14 business days for SpouseWorks staff to review your submission.

→ If Deferred: Your school must update and resubmit the ETP before approval.
Once approved, log into your account, select "Request Financial Assistance," and choose your school, plan, term dates, and courses.
Submit this request directly through your portal without school involvement.
Important Timing: You must request funding between 60 days prior and 1 day before your class start date. A separate request is required for each course/term.
School Authorization: Before class starts, your school cashier must locate your authorization letter in the AI Portal to verify funding. (Students must not start class before this is verified).
Invoicing: The school will submit invoices via the AI Portal between the course start date and 60 days after the start date.
Grades: The school will submit your final course grades within 60 days of the course end date to complete your program record.

The University will promptly readmit service members who had to withdraw from their course of study due to military service to their original course of study on the UH campus they last attended and with the same academic status they had when they last attended. Such students will have no loss of credit or privileges and will maintain registration priority consistent with their continuing student status when they return from military service to their original campus, as long as the program and courses still exist and remain viable.
