GI Bill® Benefits
The service member/veteran educational programs are mandated under Titles 38, 32 and 10 US code. General and detailed descriptions for each program are online at http://www.benefits.va.gov/GIBILL/comparison_chart.asp. This website also provides a comprehensive comparison among VA approved education training facilities. It is important for you to know which chapter you fall under so that you will know what benefits are available to you.
Chapter 30 benefits generally apply to Veterans who began active duty service for the first time after June 30, 1985, had their pay reduced $100 a month for 12 months, and received an honorable discharge.
You may receive Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) (Formerly known as Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment) services to help with job training, employment accommodations, resume development, and job seeking skills coaching. Other services may be provided to assist Veterans and Servicemembers in starting their own businesses or independent living services for those who are severely disabled and unable to work in traditional employment.

How do service members transfer their benefits?
While you’re still on active duty, you’ll need to request a Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) from the DOD through milConnect. You can’t request a TEB from VA. Request a transfer of benefits through milConnect
Chapter 35 Educational Assistance provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training.
Chapter 1606 is an educational program for members who are actively participating in the Selected Reserve. Selected Reserve components include the Army Reserve, Naval Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, and Air National Guard. The Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security (Coast Guard) determine who’s eligible for chapter 1606. The Department of Veterans Affairs administers the program and pays benefits.
