To provide peer academic advising and build a sense of community within the student body, NREM created the Undergraduate Leads (UG Leads) positions currently filled by Zach and Riley.
The UG Leads provide peer advising for first-year NREM students, but any NREM student can meet with them for advising or just to get a fellow student's perspective on life as a UH Mānoa and NREM students. They can provide personal experiences about classes, helpful tips for academic success, and manage messaging services or forums to improve collegial relationships between students. They also administer workshops for undergraduates and create student enrichment activities like social events and volunteer workdays with organizations that steward important natural resource areas.
For other NREM students, meeting with UG Leads does not replace required CTAHR or NREM advising, UG Leads CANNOT grant overrides or change your registration/financial aid. To schedule an appointment with an Undergraduate Lead, please click here.
All UG Leads receive training in Title IX sex discrimination, Safe Zone Training: LGBTQ+ Safety and Inclusion, Mānoa Peer Advising, CTAHR Advising, and as CTAHR Student Ambassadors.
To be eligible for the UG Lead position, students must have declared an NREM specialization, hold a satisfactory GPA, and be able to serve at least two semesters. Students may be nominated by their NREM faculty advisor or a fellow student. If you would like to nominate a student for an undergraduate lead position, please contact the Undergraduate Chair.
Eligible or nominated students must email a resume and a cover letter that describes their interests in the UG Lead position to the Undergraduate Chair (idol@hawaii.edu). After an interview, candidates will be selected by the NREM Undergraduate Committee. UG Leads are hired through SECE.
Both UG Lead Positions will become available for the 2025-2026 academic year.
