Internship Requirement
All NREM undergraduates must complete an approved internship experience and take NREM 492 - Internship Experience. To get approval, students must meet with their NREM advisor and complete an internship approval form. Students with an approved internship are then allowed to register for NREM 492, which is usually taken the semester after the experience is completed. Check out the flow chart below for the steps to complete this requirement!
Download and complete the forms in this section to get approval for your internship experience and an evaluation by your supervisor after completing it.
If you would like to use a potential opportunity as an internship experience, talk to your NREM advisor. If they approve and you are offered the position, have the employer fill out the agreement form, linked above. They should return this completed and signed form to you. You will upload it to the internship approval form, linked below.
Once your NREM advisor approves of the experience and your employer completes the agreement form, complete the online Google form linked above to request the department review and approve of your experience. You will contacted when it is approved and can register for NREM 492 - Internship Experience.
When your internship experience is completed or you have reached at least 135 contact hours, ask your internship supervisor to complete an evaluation of your performance, using the form linked above. Provide them a copy of this form at the beginning of your internship experience so they know how they will be asked to evaluate you. They can send a copy directly to the NREM 492 instructor or give you a copy to submit for the NREM 492 class. This evaluation is part of your grade for the class.
The objectives of the NREM internship work experience are to:
Integrate and apply knowledge from your academic program to a natural resource-related work experience or mentored research and creative project.
Obtain experience in decision-making and gain an understanding of interpersonal skills needed to work productively with employers, co-workers, customers, or clients.
Determine your level of interest in a specific field.
Develop personal contacts with people in this field.
Identify future needs in your educational program.
For NREM majors, the internship course (NREM 492, 3 credits) consists of a work experience and associated written assignments.
A minimum of 135 hours of work experience are required.
You will complete a journal and a written report of the work experience.
Your employer will complete an evaluation of your performance at the end of your employment.
The College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTHAR) shares internship and professional opportunities through the SIPO website, email, and social media.
Before applying for the opportunity, share a copy of the advertisement or description with your NREM Faculty Advisor.
They can give you a quick opinion about its suitability, discuss any concerns, provide suggestions, or help you choose another opportunity.
Read the Internship syllabus and grading rubrics from NREM 492.
Download and read the Internship Agreement and Evaluation forms.
Once you have approval from your NREM advisor
Contact your prospective internship supervisor to:
Review your internship agreement and evaluation
Discuss the terms and conditions of your internship, including tasks, internship dates, etc.
Sign the agreement form and return it to you.
Complete and submit the internship approval form
Special considerations for student research positions
For students using a research assistant position for their internship, the department would like them to learn about and participate in various aspects of the research process and understand the larger purpose of the research program they are participating in.
This can include being a participant in team meetings, discussing with your supervisor or faculty mentor what information your analyses are providing for various projects, taking on your own guided research project, running calculations or statistical analyses on data you are entering, or other things.
If someone asked you near the end of your internship about the motivation or goals of some of these projects, what new knowledge your work generated, why this research was important, who it was intended to benefit, or even who is funding this kind of work, could you provide good answers?
Look over the internship experience report, as well, to see what kinds of things you'll be expected to address in this assignment.
We encourage you to share this with your research supervisor or mentor early on and decide how you can make the most out of your internship experience.
Most students explore and engage in an internship experience after they have chosen a specialization and been assigned an NREM advisor. The advisor can help you find an internship experience and approves it before you begin.
Most students engage in the internship experience during the summer; however, students can complete an internship at any time after receiving approval.
Honors students can use their honors project as their internship experience. See the Honors section of the Academic Enrichment page for information.
NREM 492 is offered in the fall and spring semesters to accommodate these varied schedules.
Reach out to your NREM advisor for their advice and suggestions.
Talk to your fellow NREM students. Some of them may have already completed an internship experience.
