The NREM Student Planning Sheet is a spreadsheet with examples of courses you can take each semester to progress through the NREM degree in either the Natural or Social Science pathway. There is a blank template and sandbox templates for you to create a working version for yourself. Click on the link to make a copy!
UH Mānoa and NREM Requirements: See the requirements on the About the Program page. The UH Mānoa catalog has additional resources, including General Education requirements and links to course descriptions.
Course Schedule: Availability and schedules for current and upcoming semesters are listed at the UH Information Dashboard.
Course syllabi for core NREM courses are also available on this site.
Course Transfer Database: Prospective students with credits from another college or university and/or high school advanced placement (AP) course exam scores can see how their courses transfer at UH Mānoa at the course transfer database. If your course is not in the transfer database, it probably has not been evaluated yet.
Transfer Course Evaluation: Once you accept admission to UH Mānoa and declare NREM as your major, your transfer courses and AP exam scores are evaluated automatically to determine how they will count toward UH Mānoa general education and NREM major requirements. If a course has not been evaluated by UH Mānoa before, it is sent to an academic program to evaluate its equivalency. You may be asked to provide a copy of the syllabus or other course materials to help with the evaluation, so hang onto those materials. A copy from the semester you took the course is preferred, but you can request or obtain a recent copy from the course instructor or academic program.
Course equivalency: Some courses and AP exam scores are considered equivalent to courses at UH-Mānoa. In this case, you receive credit for that course at UH Mānoa, and it will count toward the same prerequisite and/or degree requirements. In many cases, the transfer course is not equivalent to a UH-Mānoa course but will be considered as an elective course within a specific academic program for a similar number of credits. These courses are also evaluated to determine if they count as a lower- or upper-division course and whether they meet the hallmarks of a foundation or diversification requirement, e.g. "DB" for diversification in biological sciences. If you have a transfer course that is designated as an upper-division course at UH-Mānoa, you can discuss with your NREM advisor whether this could count as a specialization elective.
Re-evaluating transfer courses: If you disagree with how a transfer course is evaluated, you can request a re-evaluation by contacting the Mānoa Transfer Coordination Center. Be specific in what changes you desire in the evaluation, e.g. you think a transfer course is essentially equivalent to a UH-Mānoa course or should qualify for a specific foundation or diversification designation. In these cases, the course syllabus and other materials are key.
NREM Course Substitution Request: https://go.hawaii.edu/xCm
If a transfer course is not considered equivalent to a UH-Mānoa course, but you think it close enough to a course required for the NREM major, then you can request that it be substituted for the major requirement. Likewise, if you took a course at UH-Mānoa while pursuing a different major, and you think the course is similar to the NREM required course, you can request a substitution. Use the form linked above to submit this request. As part of your request, you are asked to submit a copy of the course syllabus and any other supporting materials you feel are important.
The NREM Undergraduate Committee will review your request and make a decision. That decision will be communicated to you, CTAHR Advising, and your NREM advisor, if you have been assigned one. CTAHR Advising will make the change to your transcript.
Note: An approved course substitution only counts toward an NREM degree requirement. The substitute course may not carry the same foundation, diversification, or focus designation as the required course. This may affect your fulfillment of UH-Mānoa general education requirements. It also does not count as meeting the prerequisite requirement for another course, although you can request an override from the instructor with the explanation that your course has been approved as a substitute.
