Are you working by yourself or in a team?
By Myself
What materials will you need for your project?
Computer, Easel, Laser cutter, piece of wood
What is your plan to create in this project?
Make a maze that you tilt to get a ball through.
What unique qualities will your project have?
It's a maze.
I started my website and my project.
I looked for a maze to design.
I kept looking and decided what maze I was going to do at the end of class.
I started designing the maze and got a little more than half way done with the design.
I finished my design and I'm almost ready to cut.
I got my project cut but it didn't turn out right so i'll have to fix it manually.
Using my computer, Easel, and the Glowforge laser cutter I created a maze that you can tilt because I wanted to make something that can entertain me. I came up with this idea from a similar thing I got for Christmas. I created this as an early Christmas present for myself.
During this process, I learned how to use the laser cutter. I learned a little bit about how it works and how to design something to be cut. Another thing I learned is to make sure all your dimensions are correct. I also learned that things don't always turn out the way you want them.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative Designer because I stayed with my project until the end. Another reason my project ties to Innovative Designer is it was an authentic original topic.
A challenge I overcame on this project was using the laser cutter. I was able to do it by watching a video on how to use the laser cutter. Another challenge I overcame was fixing my project was fixing it manually. I was able to do it by putting in a lot of time and work.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change what machine I used. The reason why I would change it is because the laser cutter didn't make my project correctly. Another thing I would change is how I made my design. I would change it is because I believe it was the design that messed the laser cutter up.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the Engineering Design CTE program at Hastings High School. My project connects to careers in product design, and laser/CNC cutting. Laser/CNC cutters make anywhere from 30k to 130k. Product designers make anywhere from 50k to 160k.
