Planning Questions
Are you working by yourself or in a team?
I am working by myself
What materials will you need for your project?
I will need the Tinkercad software and a 3D printer.
What is your plan to create in this project?
My plan is to create a pencil holder block.
What unique qualities will your project have?
My project will feature never seen before pencil holder capabilities.
Daily Log:
Day 1
I made a list of 10, looked at other students' work, and messed with Tinkercad.
Day 2
I continued to mess around with Tinkercad.
Day 3
I made a cup and a pencil holder.

The finished cup
Day 4
I started making a pencil led container.

Day 5
I started making a spoon.

Day 6
We had a snow day.
Day 7
I sent my STL file to my teacher to print my Pencil Holder 3000.
Day 8
My project was printed but had to be stopped because it had 20 hours of print time left, and it was immediately apparent that it wasn't going to work. I made the holes for the pencils 7mm wide but didn't account for the eraser. In an improved design, I would increase the holes' size to 10mm.
Reflection
Using the Tinkercad software I created the Pencil Holder 3000. I did this because I wanted to have a place to put all my pencils. With the Pencil Holder 3000, I now have a place to store over 40 pencils in a clean and organized fashion.
During this process, I learned how to send my 3D design to somebody else to be printed. The way we did this was to export our design in the STL format. We then sent it to our teacher through Google Classroom for printing.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative Designer because designed a 3D print that would solve a real-world problem. My project solved the very real-world problem of unorganized pencil storage.
A challenge I overcame on this project was using the correct measurements on all the parts of my project so that they didn't exceed the 3x3x3 inch limit. I miscalculated my measurements on the box the first time so when I combined the box and the text it came out as 78.2 millimeters, 2 millimeters over 3 inches. I was able to fix this by taking everything apart again and finding where the 2-millimeter miscalculation had occurred.
Given a chance to do this again, I would have taken more time to decorate the box. I would do this because the box looked very bland and simple. I could have done something as simple as rounding corners to make it look sleeker.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education program offer Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project connects to the Engineering Design CTE program at Hastings High School. My project connects to careers in 3D Design Engineering, as this field of work deals with designing and improving plastic products. This career path has a yearly salary ranging from 52K to 118K.
