Reflection
Using a Merge Cube and the Cospaces software, I created an interactive story in augmented reality. I did this because it was really cool to be able to interact with my story while holding it in my hand. I also enjoy basic programming, which I got to do a lot of in this project.
During this process, I learned how to animate a character's movements using basic code blocks. Another way to do this would be to just use the even simpler interface that doesn't require coding. However, I like using code blocks more because they allow me to manipulate the character's movements even more.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative Designer because I created a unique story from scratch. I then used that story and created an interactive version of it in augmented reality, with code being used to animate all the character's movements and speech.
A challenge I overcame on this project was trying to utilize if-then statements to control the flow of the story when interacted with based on the user's decisions. I was able to do it by running loops that were controlled by variables that would change based on different choices. This would therefore allow different outputs and different paths for the story to follow. This story didn't have a lot of interactive parts but using this technique I could create more user decision-based stories, such as choose your own adventure stories.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change how the user interacts with the story. The reason why I would change it is that my story was very one-sided and didn't have any real way to change the outcome based on user decisions. The next best thing after a story told in augmented reality is having an interactive story told in augmented reality, more like a game. This could potentially be a lot more entertaining because the user could change the outcome of the 3d story they're holding in their hands.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offer Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project connects to the Computer Programming CTE program at Hastings High School. My project connects to careers in Augmented and Virtual Reality Engineering because careers in this field involve programming and using/creating augmented reality environments.
