Planning Questions
Are you working by yourself or in a team?
by myself
What materials will you need for your project?
A sewing machine, and fabric
What is your plan to create in this project?
I plant to create a keychain/lanyard
What unique qualities will your project have?
My project will have a pattern and a plan
Day 1: I was planning what my project was going to be
Day 2: I made my first keychain (it didn't turn out well)
Day 3 I made my "first" real keychain
Day 4: i am starting a new one
Day 5: I made one more just to make sure I had the design down
Using a sewing machine, needles, fabric and a fabric cutter I created keychains. I wanted to make another sewing project just to upgrade my skills, and make my project look a little more professional. To make it look more clean and professional I wanted the edges to be very straight and not have rough edges meaning extra strings/fabric.
During this process, I learned how to change the stitching on the sewing machine. Meaning I could change the stitch style, so if I wanted a straight stitch or a zigzag, I would press the zigzag button. If I wanted to change the speed on the sewing machine I would this piece that had arrows next to it, right to increase left to decrease.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to being an empowered learner because I am taking an active role in my education. Another way it connects to being a powered learner is using my ability to apply knowledge to new situations. My project also ties in being a Innovative designer because I had to measure the fabric and design the pattern for my keychain.
A challenge I overcame on this project was inverting the fabric. I had to invert the fabric after I sewed the ends together. It was difficult because the fabric wouldn't stay, I needed like 4 hands for this because if I folded one side over the other wouldn't stay. A solution I found was using those little pins on the top of the sewing machine to pin the fabric. It definitely helped but it still wasn't the best.
Given a chance to do this again, I would make the keychain longer. The reason why I would make it longer is because I think it would be easier to hold things. So I would make more of a lanyard than a keychain. Even though it was very hard to fold over the ledges, I would go through that misery to make it longer.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project connects to the culinary arts CTE program at Hastings High School. It connects to the culinary arts program because they share creativity, and precision. Each products follow some sort of instructions, baking follows recipes and sewing follows patterns. They also connect because they show some sort of expression and are both forms of art.
My project connects to a variety of careers like fashion and apparel, industrial and manufacturing. Fashion and apparel include fashion designer, tailor/dressmaker, and pattern maker. It connects to these careers because I'll need the ability to create original clothing and being able to alter or repair garment. Industrial and manufacturing careers are leatherworker, sailmaker, and tent maker.
