I will need a sewing machine, fabric, my iPad
What is your plan to create in this project?
I plan to create a bag
What unique qualities will your project have?
My project will have precise measurements
Day 1 Jan 14: Today I am planning my project and searching videos on how to do it.
Day 2 Jan 15: Learning how to sew, I figured out how to use the machine
Day 3 Today I made my first bag!
Day 4: Today I measured the handles and sewed the sides to make the strap thinner. Then pinned them to where I wanted them
Day 5: I sewed the straps to the side making my final bag!
This is a video of my final project
Using a sewing machine, fabric cutters, fabric, and needles, I created a book bag. I wanted to create a book bag because it make it easier to carry my books around. Another reason was because this would a friendly beginner project to introduce me into sewing. I had been wanting to sew for a while and didn't know what would be an easy project but would also help me out so I chose a book bag.
During this process, I learned how to use a sewing machine. I had to learn how to speed up the stitching, and change the stitching. I also had to learn how to change the thread and how to hook and connect the thread in the machine. Learning about the different tools was very helpful, like the pins. They were a big help keeping the fabric in place, while I sewed.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to being an empowered learner because I am taking an active role in my education. Another way it connects to being a powered learner is using my ability to apply knowledge to new situations. My project also ties in being a Innovative designer because I had to measure and design the pattern for my bag.
A challenge I overcame on this project was getting a clean cut on my fabric. The fabric wouldn't be straight or have a thread sticking out on the side. I was able to do it by slowly cutting the fabric and making sure to press firmly enough to actually cut the fabric. It was very difficult because the fabric cutter would not cut straight so I had to make sure the ruler was straight the whole time, and used precision.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the opening pocket. The reason why I would change it is because the fabric is poorly cut and it is also starting to tear, leaving thread everywhere. I would also change the inside of the bag. Meaning I would try and sew another piece of fabric to the inside giving it another layer.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project connects to the culinary arts CTE program at Hastings High School. It connects to this program because they share creativity, and precision. Both crafts involve following patterns or recipes. They also connect because they show a creative expression
My project connects to a variety of careers like fashion and apparel, industrial and manufacturing. Fashion and apparel include fashion designer, tailor/dressmaker, and pattern maker. It connects to these careers because I'll need the ability to create original clothing and being able to alter or repair garment. Industrial and manufacturing careers are leatherworker, sailmaker, and tent maker.
