Self-Care
What is Self-Care
Self-care means taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical and mental health. Everyday responsibilities really add up. You might have homework, team practice, chores, an after-school job, a pet to care for, or a younger sibling to watch. You might be dealing with the stress of college applications or an argument with a friend. These pressures can be taxing on our overall wellbeing. Self-care is the act of reinvesting your time, energy, and resources back into yourself. How often do you make a deposit into your own wellness bank?
Self-Care and Mental Health
When it comes to your mental health, self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy. Having a self-care routine has been clinically proven to reduce or eliminate anxiety and depression, improve concentration, minimize frustration and anger, and increase happiness.
Self-Care Ideas
No two people are exactly alike. Likewise, self-care routines that work for one person might not work for another. As you contemplate which self-care activities are a good fit for your lifestyle, avoid comparing your preferences to those of others.
Begin by asking yourself:
What things bring me pleasure? Can you incorporate this pleasurable activity into your daily routine?
Which friendships leave me feeling seen and loved? Focus on making time for these friendships.
Are there any tasks I dread on a regular basis? If there is a task you avoid all day or all week, consider setting a reminder to get it done early or ask a friend to help you with it. Completing an unpleasant or difficult task before you have time to dread doing it can be a form of self-care.
Consider your answers to the questions above as you decide which self-care activities you want to do daily or weekly. Consider these options, if you need some self-care ideas:
Exercising regularly. Choose an activity that you genuinely enjoy. Maybe you love to swim, run, or play baseball. Making time for these activities is self-care.
Eating your favorite foods as a part of an overall balanced diet.
Take a shower. Sometimes our hygiene takes a backseat when we feel stressed or overwhelmed. Taking the time to complete these tasks will help you feel more relaxed.
Prioritize your sleep. Say no to plans when you are tired and try adhering to a calming bedtime routine of your choosing.
Practicing relaxation exercises like deep breathing and mindfulness. These reduce stress and clear your mind.
Have a weekly date with yourself. You could browse your favorite bookstore, watch your favorite TV show, or make your favorite cookies. The options are endless!
Parents, Teachers, and Caregivers
The biggest way you can support your student's self-care is by practicing it yourself. Try implementing some form of self-care regularly and open up a conversation about these topics with your student. Ask how you can support them in finding the space to take care of themselves.
