Aside from the nervous system, the cardiovascular system is also one of the most complex. In this unit we will learn about the structure of the heart, how blood flows through the heart and to the rest of the body, and describe the pathology of the heart. A sheep heart dissection will be done to give students the opportunity to see heart structure features, including the major arteries, the atria and ventricles, and the chordae tendonae of the valves of the heart. Students should also expect two tests on this unit; one lab practical on the heart and one unit test.
Goal 12: To understand the structure, function and pathology of the cardiovascular system.
12.1 The student will be able to list the major functions of the cardiovascular system.
12.2 The student will be able to identify through diagram, microscope image, dissection or model, the major structural features of the heart, vessels and blood.
12.3 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the cellular aspects of the heart and blood, including growth and development.
12.4 The student will compare and contrast the various types of blood cells.
12.5 The student will be able to describe the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between blood and the air.
12.6 The student will be able to describe the regulation of heart rate, heart rhythm, stroke volume, blood volume and blood pressure.
12.7 The student will be able to explain the need for separate systemic and pulmonary circulations.
12.8 The student will be able to trace the pathway of a blood cell through one complete circuit through the body.
12.9 The student will show an understanding of the effects of hereditary and environmental factors, as well as, aging on the cardiovascular system.
12.10 The student will be able to identify the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases of the cardiovascular system.
