North Carolina Essential Standards:

Goal 15: To understand the structure, function and pathology of the digestive system.

• 15.1 The student will be able to list the major functions of the digestive system.
• 15.2 The student will be able to identify through diagram, dissection or model, the major organs of the digestive system.
• 15.3 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the cellular aspects of the digestion, including enzymatic activity and absorption of nutrients.
• 15.4 The student will trace the pathway of food through the digestive tract, explaining the activities that take place in each organ along the way.
• 15.5 The student will be able to indicate where and how digestive fluids are produced and what action they take in the digestive process.
• 15.6 The student will demonstrate and awareness of the micronutrient and macronutrient requirements of the body.
• 15.7 The student will show an understanding of the effects of hereditary and environmental factors, as well as, aging on the digestive system.
• 15.8 The student will be able to identify the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases of the digestive system.
