In the past decade forensic anthropology has gained new attention through tv shows like Bones. In this unit we will study the structure, function, and pathology of the skeletal system. Students will be expected to know not just the names of the bones, but recognize the location of special markings on the bones and their functions. In addition, students will be expected to identify what side of the body certain bones come from, as well as examine the pelvic girdle to determine the gender of the skeleton. Assessment from this unit will come in two forms: a lab practical on the structure of the skeletal system and a test on the physiology and pathology of the skeletal system. This section will be particularly rigorous for students, and lots of studying and spending face time with the bones during power lunch will be required for students to demonstrate success in this unit.
Goal 8. To understand the structure, function and pathology of the skeletal system.
8.1 The student will be able to list the major functions of the skeletal system.
8.2 The student will be able to identify through diagram or model, the major structural features of an osteon and a bone.
8.3 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the cellular aspects of the skeletal system, as well as, its growth and development from
cartilage and fibrous membranes.
8.4 The student will use diagrams and models to identify bones and bony features of the axial and appendicular skeletons.
8.5 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the structure of joints, types of joints and examples of each type.
8.6 The student will show an understanding of the effects of hereditary and environmental factors, as well as, aging on the skeleton.
8.7 The student will know the types of fractures and how they heal.
8.8 The student will be able to identify the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases of the skeletal system.
***Here are some FREE APPS you can download to help you study the bones and features on the skeletal bones. These come recommended by previous anatomy students. I am sure you can find many other free apps if these do not appeal to you or are not available on your devices. As always, suggestions are welcomed and encouraged!
