North Carolina Standard Course of Study

Goal 17: To understand the structure, function and pathology of the reproductive system.

• 17.1 The student will be able to list the major functions of the reproductive system.
• 17.2 The student will be able to identify through diagram, dissection or model, the major organs of the male and female reproductive system.
• 17.3 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the cellular aspects of the female reproductive system including the production of ova .
• 17.4 The student will be able to describe the female menstrual cycle including average duration, phases, and hormones that regulate the cycle and female sex characteristics.
• 17.5 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the production of sperm and the hormones that regulate male sex characteristics.
• 17.6 The student will be able to describe the major events in the development of a fertilized egg.
• 17.7 The student will show an understanding of the effects of hereditary and environmental factors, as well as, aging on reproductive capabilities.
• 17.8 The student will be able to identify the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases of the reproductive system.
