Tier 3 Response to Intervention Procedures for Speech ONLY Concerns: Articulation and Fluency
Step 1
School-based RTI review committee, including the classroom teacher and the MTSS coordinator, review the file using the RTI File Review Checklist section on the Tier 3 Submission Form, consulting with the SLP for guidance as needed.
Step 2
Once file is approved by the school's RTI team and the Tier 3 Submission Form is complete, email Mindy Watkins.
Use these guidelines for your email:
Subject: Student Name, Type of Referral (ex. John Smith, Tier 3 SPEECH ONLY referral)
The body of the email should include student’s full name, student number, date of birth, and any other valuable information.
Step 3
Lead Diagnostician, Sherry Taylor, will log and send Tier 3 approval email to MTSS coordinator and SLP
Step 4
Obtain parent/guardian permission for screenings on a B-4 form (RTI Documents); upload SIGNED form to Infinite Campus
Step 5
Hearing and vision should be current, within 9 months
Step 6
SLP will complete speech and language screening when notified by the MTSS Coordinator that the vision/hearing and B4 is current and uploaded to Infinite Campus.
Step 7
At first Tier 3 meeting, SLP will review the results of the speech-language screening. Parents should be invited to the meeting using B7 form. Minutes should be documented on the Meeting Minutes document in RTI Documents. Include information about academics in the meeting minutes, to document that academics are not a concern.
If the SLP deems that the communication impairment is at a severe level, a referral for a Full Speech Evaluation may be considered.
Step 8
Classroom teacher will provide Tier 3 interventions, with the support and guidance of SLP.
Team will meet every 4-6 weeks to review the progress monitoring data, discuss the student's progress toward the goal(s), and evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention(s). Parents are invited to each meeting (Form B7); each meeting should be documented in Infinite Campus on the Meeting Minutes document.
Step 9
Intervention plan must be modified if student doesn’t make adequate progress.
Step 10
If student is making progress, consult with SLP to determine whether or not the student's performance goal needs to be increased, if no changes need to be made, or if returning to Tier 2 is appropriate.
If insufficient progress is made, consult with SLP to determine if a Full Speech Evaluation referral is recommended, or if the modification of the intervention plan is adequate at this time.
