February 14th, also known as Valentine's Day, is a controversial holiday for American citizens. Some enjoy expressing their love for significant others or those they are close to; however, many dislike Valentine's Day due to its lucrative aspect for businesses and the feelings of loneliness that become magnified during the love-filled holiday. The National Retail Federation estimates that fifty-three percent of American consumers celebrate Valentine's Day and that the holiday alone will bring in $25.8 billion dollars for companies this year. Almost ninety-two percent of Americans purchase candy to give to their closest friends and closest family members, which amounts to fifty-eight million pounds of the sweet cocoa delights. Roses are also a popular item bought during Valentine’s Day, with 250 million roses being prepared specifically for the day.
Small businesses gain a lot of income from holidays like Valentine’s Day, which helps to raise the country’s GDP and support local areas. However, the amount of spending that occurs during the holiday raises the question about the true meaning of Valentine's Day and whether or not it is just a ploy to gain more money. Almost forty-eight percent of Americans worry about friends and family feeling lonely during the day. The AARP conducted research that said that non-married adults were more likely to feel lonely compared to those in relationships. Valentine’s Day may not be the best holiday for people who are not focused on love, but its benefit on the economy is undeniable and should be taken into account when considering whether or not Valentine’s Day is a real holiday.
