You have now studied Italian for two years in secondary school. In year 9, Italian becomes an elective. Don’t let your Italian language studies journey end. If you have had good results and you have enjoyed your lessons, continue! If you have not performed so well, this is the chance to prove to yourself that with some effort and dedication you can become richer in cultural knowledge and learn to speak another language. Don’t say to yourself that you can study the language later in life. Studies show that the young mind is the best suited to acquiring language. If you stop your journey now, you will never know what a magical time you missed. There are hardworking dedicated teachers and students at GWSC. Continue to be part of this happy, learning community, one which is different from all other curriculum areas.
As you continue this journey, you will continue to broaden your vocabulary and to learn more about how the language is structured. Learning Italian allows you to learn more about the English language as both have their origins in the Latin language: 60% of the English language is related to Italian. Learning a language also allows you to learn more about yourself as you explore topics such as your daily routine, health and fitness, city and country life, fashion and festivals. You are provided with many opportunities to develop your listening, reading, speaking and writing skills. Language is about communication; communication orally and in written formats.
Language learning is also about diversity. Learn about how the Italians see their place in the world and the world around them. Learn more about yourself as you explore cultural topics such as food, fashion, business and innovation, movies, art, music and sports. The more you learn about other people, the more you learn about yourself.
Language learning is about connecting and using the language in a hands-on way. There are many opportunities for you to use the language in Melbourne. Italian is a real community language. In the Census of 2011, 37% of respondents were of Italian heritage. Learn Italian to communicate, connect, explore and grow.
We are looking forward to guiding you on your journey in Year 9 Italian. If you need further information, Prof Blazincic and Signora Bonafede (staffroom MU6) will be more than happy to chat to you :-)
