The course is provided as a continuation of language learned in Years 7 to 9 and is preparing students for their language studies at VCE level based on their language eligibility. In addition to the second language, second language advanced and first language streams, the College will introduce Chinese Language, Culture and Society in 2026 for non-background students.
In all streams of Chinese, students develop their communicative skills as they are introduced to more complex structures and are provided with various opportunities to consolidate these.
Learning activities engage students in the content and promote collaboration. Activities may include conversations, role plays and project work in addition to grammar based tasks and aural and written comprehension.
They continue to develop an awareness of Chinese culture with a specific focus on changes and issues in the modern world, travel and tourism in China, life abroad and education and work opportunities. Students engage with meaningful and relevant content and they develop their intercultural awareness comparing life in China and the Chinese speaking communities around the world, Australia and beyond.
