Chinese is offered at both beginner, intermediate and advanced level in Years 7-10. VCE Chinese Second Language, Second Language Advanced and First Language are also available at the College in Years 11-12.
The College will also be offering a new stream of Chinese at year 10 from 2026 for non-background students. This stream of Chinese will prepare students for VCE Chinese Language, Culture and Society. This new subject has been introduced to cater for students with no background in the language and is structured accordingly.
We recognise and understand that students who learn Chinese at the school come from diverse backgrounds and have different amounts of experience in studying the language. Hence, our highly experienced and passionate Chinese teachers are skilled in tailoring the work to cater for individual students’ needs and learning capabilities. Apart from personalisation, students can expect their Chinese lessons to also be enjoyable and engaging. Students can expect to participate in debates, role plays, peer teaching activities and cultural exploration.
The curriculum is also linked to the latest Chinese pop culture and trends to make Chinese learning relevant to the students. This is an exciting way for both beginner and advanced learners to develop their knowledge and skills in Chinese.
Australia being a multicultural country, has fully embraced China’s grand and fascinating culture. Not only is Mandarin one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world, it has also emerged as one of the most commonly taught languages in Australian schools.
Learning a second language is a skill in itself, and mastering the art of the Chinese language is a significant achievement in a student’s life. Students will be immersed in Chinese history and customs while learning Chinese at GWSC. When travelling, students will be able to break down communication barriers which allows them to interact with local citizens. Additionally, in our 21st century, many prospective employers are seeking candidates who are able to speak a second language, especially Chinese as China is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
Hence, the benefits of studying Chinese are endless and will provide significant value to a student’s lifetime, even well-beyond school.
