The course is provided as a continuation of language learned in Years 7 to 9 and is preparing students for their language studies at VCE level.
Students develop their communicative skills as they are introduced to more complex structures and are provided with various opportunities to consolidate these. They go beyond the basics and the vocabulary and begin putting the language into context.
A range of learning activities engage students in the content and promote collaboration and communication. Activities may include conversations, role plays and cultural projects in addition to grammar based tasks and aural and written comprehension.
They continue to develop an awareness of Italian culture with a specific focus on changes and issues in the modern world, travel and tourism in Italy, life abroad and education and work opportunities. Students engage with meaningful and relevant content and they develop their intercultural awareness comparing life in Italy, Australia and beyond.
During their Italian studies, students participate in a range of cultural and linguistic activities including a Renaissance Art tour and workshop at the National Gallery of Victoria , the annual Italian Film Festival and participation in the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition as well as the broad range of activities offered during Languages Week.
