Editing takes.... quite a bit. I spent at least eight hours on this assignment between picking a song, editing the music, planning/storyboarding scenes based on the sound, actually filming while painting, and then, of course, editing. Although I explored a more cinematic style of creating videos, as I intended to do, there's much work to be done. I strayed from my original idea, but this SDA still accomplished the goal of showing me as an artist, as viewers get a sneak peak into my process (late nights paired with Indian music). This format allowed for storytelling. I started with a blank canvas and ended with a final piece while also showing my personality. As I continue to develop online, I want to use my voice in at least one video. I've been hesitant to do this because, with the amount of time I spend on social media, it gets hard to not psyche myself out about how good other peoples’ videos are. However, I know that those people only got there through practice. That constant reminder that I am still a beginner is the most important thing I took away from this assignment. Things take time and I realized I need to be more confident in knowing I will get there some day.
While getting better at video editing is a skill I truly want to get better at, it is something that will develop alongside my journey regardless, so I don't want to dedicate my new essential question to it. Rather, I want to enter December with a more "manageable" topic and dedicate my time to communicating that through better editing.
Something I started to think about during a homeroom meeting last week was impact. Why does what I'm doing matter? What sets me apart? Why do other people care? Essentially, what is going to take me from simply making videos to building "a following"? Sure, someone might make great videos, but that alone doesn't make people stay and follow them; you must do something meaningful: something that "lingers." While I try to brainstorm some ideas, I've also been watching videos on how to edit.
Main Channel Watched: The Two Faced (yes, I binged his entire account)
Take-aways: editing skills (of course), storytelling ALONGSIDE tutorials (similar how I want to storytell alongside creating art), used his voice, but kept it cinematic
NEW DIRECTION
At the beginning of the year, I was a bit lost on how EMC was going to be laid out and I was unsure on many things- especially my “focus.” I realize now that I don’t have to be as specific as "mural artist." My main theme can simply be growing a business through trial and error.
POTENTIAL MONTHLY STRUCTURE:
Art Exploration: new thing to dive into every month related to art (example: October was mostly doodles, November was insight into how I work)
Editing Goals: choose something new to do in videos or some way to progress in editing every month (Example: my goal for next month is to incorporate my voice)
Explore the monthly art topic and communicate it using the editing goal
MURAL UPDATES: The dates keep getting pushed for multiple reasons, so I think this idea is something I'll revisit in January/February (especially since I have a really good December idea).
