After considering, I have decided to stick with the topic of gun violence. It makes the most sense, given that it is something I am most passionate about, builds on previous SDAs, and the fact that Advocacy Day is coming up on March 10th. During last year's Advocacy Day, gun-violence stories were shared prior to lobbying at the Capitol. I hope that one of these stories may inspire my next SDA.
During a visit to Boston during break, I did a quick drawing while vlogging my solo bus ride, edited the video that very night, and posted it. Although it took time, these vlog-style videos are manageable to edit. Similarly, I hope to take my sketchbook with me to Advocacy Day. While people talk and during any downtime (like lunch breaks and waiting for everyone to gather in the morning), I want to sketch a few doodles of what I see (and take a few videos if appropriate). I'll note down major stories or just things that stuck with me to later use.
Since vlog-style videos are easy to edit for me, I would be able to extend this next SDA by going in depth on one story and doing a sketch while I talk about it or relay its message.
Basically, I would end up with two videos: one at Advocacy Day and quick sketches of what I see, and another talking about a specific moment while I draw a related image.
While this may seem like a lot of work, I know the first portion won't take me more than a day, as most of the work has to be done during Advocacy Day, so there really is no opportunity for me to fall behind on that. Of course, I may not get many sketches done since we will also be lobbying, so I'm not going to put too much pressure on myself. I think the second part of this SDA is more impactful/vital. Therefore, the first portion does not nessecarily have to be a master piece.
Potential Schedule:
March 10 (tues.) Advocacy Day (sketches + filming)
March 17 - Edit + Post Advocacy Day "Vlog"
March 24 - Pick a story, story board, and decide what to draw
March 27 - finish drawing out the story + filming me drawing
March 31 - finish editing story video (this includes voice over and script)
**concern: I think that this schedule is running a little tight at the end of the month, but it should be okay**
Senioritis has been kicking in for me, so I'm hoping that by choosing a topic I know I'm passionate about, I will actually be able to follow through. Also, I think it is more beneficial to stick with the same theme, especially since symposium speeches are coming up and I could use a moment from Advocacy Day to capture people's attention or to just share an anecdote for pathos. Looking forward to it!
