Services Provided by School Counselors

Individual Student Planning: School counselors work with 9-12 students to identify short- and long-term academic, personal-social, and college and career goals. Utilizing these goals, counselors help students and families identify current and future courses of study, possible barriers to success, and solutions. In this way, school counselors and students are able to plan for goal-attainment while also reinforcing problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Responsive Services: School counselors are able to provide assistance to students and schools in moments of need through individual and group or classroom lessons. By building relationships with students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members, counselors are quickly able to respond to one child or an entire school with resources and support.

Consultation: The school counselor is available to parents, teachers, and other educational professionals to discuss student concerns and develop proactive plans for student achievement. School counselors are knowledgeable about the educational process; child and adolescent development; and local, state, and national resources. Through this collaboration and their awareness of the "whole" child, school counselors are able to build bridges to academic success.

Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, social/emotional development and college/career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. MISSION

The Valhalla High School counseling team is committed to providing a comprehensive, data-driven counseling program with the goal of supporting ALL students in reaching their full potential. We strive to implement a proactive and preventative program that supports rigorous student achievement in the areas of academic, career, personal/social development, and post-secondary planning.

We aim to create meaningful relationships with not only students, but also parents, teachers, and all relevant stakeholders. Together, we strive to support students to become successful lifelong learners and productive citizens. The VHS counseling program is committed to having an equitable, data-informed program that is innovative and responsive to students’ ever changing needs.

VISION

All students of Valhalla High School are unique and inclusive learners who will recognize their value and worth and will find their own personal way to contribute to our society. They invite diversity, are compassionate, and will strive to overcome the challenges that come from an ever-changing global workforce. Our students will graduate and be equipped with problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership skills needed to accomplish both their short and long term goals.

As Professional School Counselors We Believe:

EVERY student has the right to be served by the school counseling program and receive all opportunities and resources that we offer.
EVERY student can succeed when empowered and supported with the necessary tools and guidance.
EVERY student should graduate from high school prepared for postsecondary opportunities.
School counselors are advocates for the needs of our students especially for their academic, personal/social, and/or college and career-related needs.
Nurturing all students' social and emotional well-being will contribute to their academic achievement.
It is crucial and necessary for school counselors to lead and collaborate with educational stakeholders in order to meet students’ needs and increase equity.
