How do I apply to a private or out-of-state college?

Many private and out-of-state colleges/universities use the Common Application or the Coalition Application. Check with the individual school to see if you can use one of these apps or if you need to submit a unique application to that school. If the Common App or the Coalition App is an option, we recommend using it, as you can fill out one application and send it to multiple schools. The links for both applications are above.

Can I afford a private/out-of-state school?

While the sticker price of a private or out-of-state college/university can initially be pretty intimidating, there are a LOT of financial aid options available. Private schools in particular, often offer a much greater amount of financial aid, including merit based grants and scholarships. If you are interested, we encourage you to apply and see what kind of aid you qualify for. Regarding out-of-state public schools, you will pay a higher price as an out-of-state resident, however, there are programs that can help. The Western Undergraduate Exchange, for example, offers great scholarship opportunities for students looking to attend out-of-state colleges in the Western United States. The link is above, so check it out! We encourage you to explore your options and see what kind of financial aid is available before making a final decision.

Do I have to meet "a-g" requirements to attend a private/out-of-state college?

The "a-g" requirements are specific to public California universities (UC/CSU). However, many private and out-of-state colleges have similiar admission requirements. We highly encourage students to do their research and make sure they are completing the specific requirements for schools they wish to attend.
