What is a Form 1095-C?

Each year, Greenville County Schools will issue all eligible employees IRS form titled Form 1095-C. The Form 1095-C is required under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It contains information about medical coverage offered to you and your dependents by Greenville County Schools. The IRS will use this information to validate compliance with the ACA's individual shared responsibility requirements.

Greenville County Schools is required to send the form to individuals who meet the eligibility criteria as part of its reporting obligations under the ACA. Please consult with your tax advisor if you have questions about how the information reported on the 1095-C will impact your federal tax return and taxes.

Why did I get more than one Form 1095?

If you worked for more than one eligible employer during the calendar year, you may receive a Form 1095-B or 1095-C depending on the coverage provided by your employer. For example, if you changed jobs during the year and were enrolled in coverage with both employers, you may receive a Form 1095 from each employer.

When will I get my Form 1095-C?

A copy of your 1095-C will be mailed to your home address by the annual IRS deadline.  The deadline is subject to change annually, but is normally at the beginning of March of each year.

Can I file my tax return if I have not received any or all of these forms?

You do not have to wait for the 1095-C from GCS to file your individual income tax return. You can use other forms of documentation, in lieu of the Form 1095 information returns to prepare your tax return.  Other forms of documentation that would provide proof of your insurance coverage include:

If you and your entire family were covered for the entire year, you may check the full-year coverage box on your return.   If you or your family members did not have coverage for one or more months of the calendar year, you may claim an exemption or make an individual shared responsibility payment. You will not need to send the IRS proof of your health coverage. However, you should keep any documentation with your other tax records. This includes records of your family¹s employer-provided coverage, premiums paid, and type of coverage.
