Erin's Law, passed in South Carolina in 2014, requires schools to provide training in personal safety and abuse prevention for students in public schools. Lessons are developed by the S.C. Department of Education and are delivered to the students between Thanksgiving and Winter breaks. The lesson in every grade emphasizes identifying a trusted adult whom the students can report to if necessary. The purpose of the law is to ensure that all students Pre-Kindergarten through High School receive this prevention instruction during the academic school year. The intent of the law is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to remain safe from sexual assault and how to make a report if an assault occurs.
