In this article, Ava will be rating Pt. One and Pt. Two of J. Cole’s “She’s Mine”.
Jermaine Lamarr Cole, also known as J. Cole, is an American hip-hop recording artist and record producer. Cole’s birthday is Jan. 28, 1985, and he is now 39 years of age. He is known for his most famous songs, “No Role Modelz”, and “Love Yourz” from the album 2014 Forest Hills Drive. Another song is “Nobody’s Perfect” from Cole World: The Sideline Story, which is the story of his journey from being on the sidelines to achieving success in the music industry.
In 2016, Cole released the album 4 Your Eyez Only. This was his fourth studio album. It is a deeply personal and thoughtful album dedicated to a close friend of Cole’s, who passed away. Arturo Flores from The Daily 49er states, “Each song establishes his character, as he goes from selling drugs and starting fights to eventually falling in love and starting a family.” The album explores themes of love, loss, and the struggles of Black men in America. It is a powerful and emotional album that showcases Cole’s storytelling and lyrical prowess.
In 4 Your Eyez Only, Cole released “She’s Mine, Pt. 1”, the fifth song in the album. Genius states, “J. Cole wrote this song about his wife, Melissa Heholt, whom he married in 2015.” Throughout the song, he reveals glimpses into his private love life. The song lyrics preach, “Catch me, don't you catch me I've fallen in love for the first time.” This lyric is about him falling in love with his wife shortly after they married. Therefore, “She’s Mine Pt. 2” is about him falling in love with being a father to his daughter, who is now his second love. He has released a previous song called “Wet Dreamz”, which is also dedicated to his wife. The song explores his first relationship experiences as a teenager, and includes the themes of vulnerability, innocence and the awkwardness of those times at such a young age.
In addition to “She’s Mine Pt. 1”, Cole also released "She's Mine, Pt. 2”, the ninth song in the album. This song seems to be dedicated to his newborn daughter, and not a lover, which a lot of people seem to believe. Some think it is about a lover because of the lyrics, “Needin' me, wantin' me, givin' me a chance to feel special, To somebody in a world where they not lovin' me.” However, he later talks about Santa Claus, Christmas cheer, and making all of the evil to his daughter disappear. For all of the people who are erroneously posting images of their partners attached to “She’s Mine, Pt. 2” on Instagram, instead use “She’s Mine, Pt. 1”, since the second part is about love for a child.
“She’s Mine, Pt. 1” has been rated 78/100 on AOTY from a whopping total of 170 ratings. Only 1% of users disliked the song and about 77% enjoyed it. Spotify shows that “She’s Mine, Pt. 1” has been played over 140,708,980 times, and “She’s Mine, Pt. 2” has been played 103,673,410 times. Throughout his experiences while creating this album, “She’s Mine, Pt. 1” and “She’s Mine, Pt. 2” mean a lot to Cole, since he is expressing his love to the two people who mean the most to him in his life.
