Fallon talks about the infuance of the punk scene.
Punk is a music subculture that is widely known for its vast array of ideologies, fashion, art, dance, literature, film, and other forms of expression. Punk originated in the mid ’70s and was at its peak until the early ’80s. This was followed by ’90s punk, which is considered to be New Wave. Being a subgenre of rock music, Punk most commonly has short formats, fast tempos, distorted riffs, and loud vocals-- with lyrics expressing ideals such as non-conformity and anti-authoritarianism. The overall message punk wanted to get across was very much anti-mainstream, anti-establishment, and anti-commercial.
What makes punk so diverse compared to other music genres is its vast amount of music styles. According to National Geographic, they consider punk, “To its makers and its audience, punk was the cultural identity of anger, disenfranchisement, and rebellion.” After the introduction of punk, the genre was not strictly limited to just music, and it soon became its own ideology. Each style of punk has its own fashion preferences that goes along with it, but the general punk fashion includes at least some of the following: combat boots, leather jackets, mohawks, spiked or colored hair, chains, safety pins, ripped jeans, bondage pants, piercings, and flannels.
Being one of the most popular punk bands of all time, Sex Pistols has caused some controversy. “God Save The Queen” is the second single by the British icons, and has made its way to be one of the most significant punk songs in history. At the time, the lyrics and cover were seen to be very provocative, and it most definitely stirred up widespread horror throughout the UK. According to Far Out Magazine, “The extent of the offense caused was so deep that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) flat out banned the song.” Sex Pistols created a commotion with the release of this single, which only added to both the band and the song's legacy.
Since the emergence of punk rock, many punk subgenres and styles have developed over time. For example, ska punk is a genre that fuses the elements of both ska music and punk music. Ska punk reached its mainstream success in the late ’90s with bands such as Sublime, which are still relatively popular to this day. Anarchy is an ideology that tends to be most associated with punk music. Anarcho-punk, in contrast to Peace punk, is an ideological punk subculture that strongly promotes anarchism. According to Play Alone Records, "Pacifism vs. anarchism: Peace punk is focused on pacifism, which is the belief that all violence is wrong. Anarcho-punk is focused on anarchism, which is the belief that all forms of government are oppressive and should be abolished." Genres such as grunge and emo can even be considered variations of punk due to their influence.
In the end, punk subculture will be known as an influential movement that has challenged social norms and has advocated for individuality. Its heavy impact on music, fashion, and art has promoted freedom of expression; its social and political impact continues to be felt to this day. All in all, the argument of whether or not punk is dead will continue to be debated by many.
