In this article, Rylie Revercomb will talk about the new animated TMNT show coming out this summer
2023 was the Year of the Turtle. Well, technically it wasn’t, but it was a good year for Ninja Turtles fans of all ages. Finally, after seven years, we had finally gotten a new Ninja Turtle movie, one that honored the original ideas of Eastman and Laird but added its own turtley-twist. The Mutant Mayhem movie was the most successful Ninja Turtle movie compared to all of the others, and breathed new life into the franchise. In fact, as of Super Bowl Sunday, we have an announcement of a new series that will be premiering this summer. So, let’s find out what this new series has in store!
First, we’ll start with the setting of the series. When the show was first announced by producer Seth Rogan, he told CBR that “The series is set in the same world as the movie, taking place in between the first film and the upcoming sequel.” This means that the series will be exploring the turtles' school life, something that previous TMNT iterations have never done before. Scenes from the trailer show the turtles walking into school and down the street, and inside of a school bathroom. The show also plans to explore each brother’s journeys separately; this is seen in the trailer with Leo hanging out with April in her apartment, and Mikey fighting a robot at school.
The series will also be welcoming back the same voice actors for the Turtles and April, and there is some speculation that we might also see other familiar characters, such as Casey Jones, the Shredder, and Karai. While the casting for those characters has not been officially decided yet, we know that they will make some sort of appearance in the show as the producers themselves have given us some minor spoilers! These include a secret scene at the end of the film, posters with foot clan symbols and Casey’s hockey sticks, and even teases in upcoming trailers. So, not only will we be seeing new ideas in the show, but also revisiting old characters. It is the perfect blend for the show.
However, the coolest part of this series is the new style of animation the producers have chosen. The Mutant Mayhem movie that came before its predecessor was 3-D animated and had a graffiti comic book kind of vibe. While the new series also has the messy line art kind of style, it is now 2-D, which means we get to see these characters in a brand new way. The main reason for this change is that the last movie took four years to produce. Screenrant says Seth Rogan changed the style because “The show’s creators could not utilize the incredibly time-consuming animation style of the previous movie.” This change makes sense, and it is also getting plenty of people excited as they compare the style to the '80s cartoon-- something original fans have been asking to return since after the first cartoon ended.
All in all, the new series should be just as good as the movie. Both old and new fans can't wait to see what the new show has in store. With that, this article comes to an end. Make sure you stay tuned this summer to catch the premiere of Mutant Mayhem: Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
