For the past many centuries our world has been starting wars with each other which, in turn, brings extreme anguish to societies everywhere. However, over the years, these wars have become much more brutal in ways people never could have imagined. In Eastern Europe, conditions have only continued to grow worse for the independent country of Ukraine as Russia continues to invade their territories. People all around the world watch in horror while these families and soldiers fight day in and day out for their survival; as a result, people have grown curious as to what conditions are like for these people and what is being done to put an end to the warfare. It is important at this time that people stay educated on the situation so that the most can be done to help this little country stay alive.
Many officials saw this coming months in advance and were quick to warn Ukraine of what was to come but, unfortunately, all they could do was sit and wait. After playing the waiting game for long enough, Putin made his move and set a rapid advancement into the Ukrainian territories on February 24, 2022. According to the New Lines Institute, a strategy and policy magazine, Putin first acted in the capital Kyiv, Odessa, and Kharkiv regions. In response to Russia's attack, Ukraine fought hard to defend their territories and recover any that were lost. As stated by the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University, the Russo-Ukrainian war is the “largest war in Europe since WWI”. Despite the severity of Russia's attacks, Ukraine continues to hold out in hopes that they can stay afloat long enough to win the war.
As conditions grew worse on the battlefield, they also worsened for civilians whose homes were being turned to rubble and families torn apart amongst the chaos. Towns were falling into piles of dust as a result of the bombs dropped by Russia; consequently, people either fled in search of safety or stood their ground refusing to leave their homes. As explained by BBC News, “...there are just over 1000 remaining” in Avdiivka, a town which had a population of over 30,000 before the war. As the Russians aimlessly drop bombs over their homes via drones, these civilians are killed or injured and left to die under the wreckage due to lack of emergency services and equipment. Not only are conditions on land harsh, but Russia and Ukraine have also been exchanging prisoners of war through plains. The New York Times shows that “...Wednesday was the 50th exchange between the nations since the war began”. There have even been reports of these prisoners coming back with severe injuries and illness.
As a result of Ukraine becoming a member of NATO, they were able to receive some assistance in this dire time of need. They have been given almost everything necessary for them to hold out against Russia and defend themselves. Other allied countries have worked alongside NATO to ensure this happened, sending the struggling country guns, clothes, food, and equipment along with training on how to use the equipment. According to The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, “Allies have committed around EUR 100 billion in military aid to Ukraine,” along with this they have stated that resources continue to be sent over to aid in their warfare. Not only do Ukraine's allies continue to provide them with necessary essentials, but they have also ensured that civilians keep their humanity by making sure that there is humanitarian aid, like housing for refugees, criminals continue to be held accountable in a time of chaos, and food exports continue to move smoothly.
While this brutal war enters its second year of combat, resources continue to run dry on the battlefield while any hope civilians hold onto begins to leave their hearts. The most that can be done to ensure these families hold out for their loved ones is to provide them with the utmost care and support in their times of triumph. This war is proof of just how important it is that our society stays educated so that we can all work together to provide peace around the world.
