January SEL Skill of the Month: Goal Setting
January is a time of reflection and renewal- a time where we can work on things we would like to make better. Because of this, January is a great month to start setting goals for your future! Sometimes the tasks we want to accomplish are very big and seem impossible to attain. Goal setting allows us to take these tasks and break them into smaller parts. One big thing to remember when we create goals is to make them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound). SMART goals help us be successful because we are setting goals that are right for ourselves. Don't take on the task all at once-start small and build your way up. You have what it takes to accomplish anything you set your mind to!
November is a wonderful month to think about gratitude. Gratitude is more than just an attitude; it's a practice that can bring real benefits to our well-being. Studies show that people who regularly express gratitude experience less stress, feel happier, and even sleep better. Being grateful shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have, fostering a positive mindset that can improve our relationships and overall outlook.

There are a lot of different factors in our life that can cause stress. Stress is our body’s way of making us more alert and ready to take on challenges, and when kept in balance, it can benefit us and help us perform. Things we can do to keep our stress response in tune are things like laughing, listening to music, asking for help or exercising and staying active. By learning how to master our stress we will be able to concentrate better, tests will be easier to take, and we will be in a better mood!
