To start, you'll need to divide players into two teams. Follow youth soccer guidelines for number of players per team (3 players for Kindergarten - no goalies, 4 players for 1st and 2nd - no goalies, 7 players for 3rd and 4th - with goalies, 9 players for 5th and 6th - with goalies).
Teams start with all their players on their own side of the field. A player from each team meets in the middle of the field where they "Roshambo" (rock-paper-scissors). The team that wins "Roshambo" gets to choose to start with the ball or let the other team start with the ball. The team that starts with the ball places the ball in the middle of the field (in the center of the mid-line) for the kick-off. They can pass the ball to their teammates or attempt a field goal.
During kick-off, players must stay on their side of the field until the ball is kicked.
The team that has possession of the ball is the offense, the team that does not have the ball is the defense.
Goals made are worth 1 point.
Players are not allowed to touch other players or hold on to other player's clothing.
Players are not allowed to touch the ball with their arms or hands, unless they're the goalie/goal keeper.
If the ball goes out of bounds along the long sides of the field (sidelines) the team that didn't touch it last, gets the ball. They must throw the ball back into the field with an over-the-head throw (both hands over the head holding the ball with both feet on the ground). This is called a "Throw-in."
If the attacking team (the offense) makes the ball go out of bounds along the other team's short side of the field (end line or goal side) the defending team gets to do a "Goalie Kick" (the goalie gets the ball and can kick/pass to their teammates or just kick the ball down field).
If the defending team makes the ball go out of bounds along their own end line/goal side, the attacking team (the offense) gets the ball. They must place the ball in the corner and kick it back into the field. This is called a "Corner Kick."
When a goal is scored, the other team gets the ball at the center of the mid-line and both teams need to be positioned on their own side of the field.
There's only one goalie per team. The goalie can only use their hands within the penalty area and the goalie box and shouldn't hold the ball for longer than 6 seconds. Also, the goalie can't pick up the ball if it was last kicked by a player on their team.
Offside rules for when the offense is in the defenses half of the field do not apply for players 12 and younger.
Strategies/skills to use when trying to keep possession of the ball: Pull backs, fakes, kick and follow, give and go, give them your back.
