Note: If the weather is bad, and you don't have the gym, consider playing four corners, quiet ball or watching a PBS kids program in an available classroom, relo or other space. Additional inside games you could play are available here: https://sites.google.com/granitesd.org/mr-brough/teacher-helps
Grades K - 6
(15 - 20 minute Activity)
Equipment: Cones, hula hoops, foam noodles, poly spots (optional)
Description:
Use cones to set boundaries for the "Containment Unit" (the ghost trap boxes). If you're using the gym, use each corner of the court to set up the containment unit boundaries.
The hula hoops are part of the containment unit, were students go if they get tagged. Consider placing 2 to 4 hula hoops in each containment unit.
Ghostbusters use the foam noodle as their "Proton Pack" (the ghost sucking gun/vacuum). Depending on the number of students, it's best to start out with a small group of students as ghostbusters, then add more if needed. The rest of the students are ghosts. Try to ensure that all students get a chance to play the role of a ghostbuster.
In order to suck a ghost into the gun/vacuum the ghostbuster must touch the ghost with the end of the noodle and make a sucking noise. Remind students not to hit with the foam noodles and that they must follow tag game rules: No head, no face, no chest, no waist (waist meaning private areas below the belt).
The ghost then goes over to a hula hoop located in one of the containment units. When there, they need to escape from the contaiment unit and rejoin the game by hula hooping 10 times around their waste (doesn't have to be consecutive) or doing 10 jumping jacks and 10 full seconds (no fast counting) of running in place.
Modifications:
You can also place poly spots, or some other object, around the perimeter to represent tombstones. The tombstones can serve as safe spots for the ghosts (they must exercise, such as run in place, arm circles, etc., if they're using a tombstone).
