Message from the Headteacher
Dear parents,
Welcome back to a new school year! It's been a wonderful start, and I'm thrilled to see all of our children settling in so well. A special mention goes to our youngest learners who have started in Nursery—what a joy it has been to see them meet our resident chickens for the first time! Our Reception children have also made a fantastic start, quickly finding their feet and diving into their learning journeys.
It was lovely to see Nursery, Reception, and Year 1 parents at the picnic last Saturday. It was a perfect way to kick off the year. Keep an eye out for more events throughout the year—we’d love to see you all there!
A quick reminder that the GPPSA AGM is on Monday 30 September at 7pm, and I hope to see many of you there, click here to let us know you'll be coming. Your support and involvement make such a difference to our school.
Looking ahead, we have Learning Conversations on Thursday 24 October, which will be an opportunity to meet your child's class teacher. Appointment slots will be available to book on Arbor next week.
Exciting news for children in Year 1 and Year 4—they will be receiving their new Chromebooks in the next few weeks! You should have received a letter this morning about voluntary donations. We greatly appreciate any contributions to help support the various enrichment opportunities we offer the children. Please log onto Arbor - School Shop - Voluntary donations to school in order to make a donation. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Please see below for key dates and important information about the term ahead.
With my very best wishes,
Tijen Hassan

Tips for creating family rules for using devices
According to a study published by Ofcom, every child in the UK will possess at least one digital device by the age of 17 – most commonly a smartphone While owning online technology is widely accepted, this by no means removes the risks associated with using such devices. It is important to support children's development of boundaries and a healthy relationship with technology, starting from their first steps into the digital world.
Many trusted adults might find establishing and implementing rules for technology to be complex and difficult. It can sometimes be hard to know what specifically to restrict, how to restrict it, and how to do so fairly. To lend a hand, this week’s #WakeUpWednesday guide offers advice on creating rules for the whole family around using devices.
A set of family rules agreed on with children can promote the safe, responsible use of devices like tablets, smartphones. gaming consoles and computers. By developing rules around technology, it opens the conversation regarding boundaries and expectations, ensuring a healthy balance of screentime. This guide will help you to develop an age-appropriate family agreement to suit your household.
At Grange Park we take online safety very seriously and at the beginning of each school year provide a virtual Parents Online Awareness session which we advise all parents to access: The session is available from Monday 30 September to 27 October, by clicking on the link below. Once your details are entered, the session will start immediately.

You would have also been sent an email with all the information that you need.
We’ve had a busy summer on the allotments. We harvested beans, courgettes, cucumbers, carrots, sweetcorn, chilli peppers and aubergines. Some we gave to the Bounds Green Food Bank - they asked us to thank all the little farmers who helped grow them. The Pantry’s head chef Carolyn used the sweet golden tomatoes and the aubergines to make meals for the children. The lunchtime gardening club also did a great job helping with the weeding and collecting seeds for spring. By the allotments, there’s a new noticeboard with news of what we are doing with the vegetables, as well as upcoming events and details about how parents can donate and volunteer. Volunteers are always welcome. Join us at the allotments on Friday mornings, after drop-off, from 9-10am.
Grange Park Primary School has been working hard to lessen its environmental impact as a local institution and these efforts have resulted in an Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction award. The school’s Eco Ambassadors team, working in conjunction with Michael, conducted an environmental review, assessing how eco-friendly the school was.
They reviewed everything from biodiversity within school grounds to how children and staff members travel to the site each day. Building on their findings, they then planned a year of action designed to advance Grange Park’s green credentials, improve the local environment, and protect our planet. The young conservationists collaborated on projects with Greenpeace, the RSPB, Keep Britain Tidy, Earth Hour, Safer Streets, the Friends of Firs Farm and many others as they moved the focus outside of the school this year. The Green Flag award, an international accreditation, recognises their amazing work in making the school more environmentally friendly and raising eco-awareness in the community.
We are extremely lucky at Grange Park that all children from Year 1 upwards have their very own chromebook.
Click here to hear how we use chromebooks for supporting retrieval practice.
Some parents have generously contributed to our voluntary donations to support education here at Grange Park Primary school. There is no fixed amount, donations are entirely discretionary and any amount is sincerely appreciated. Simply log onto Arbor - School Shop - Voluntary donations to school.
This half term, we are focusing on courage as our school’s character trait. Courage is more than just bravery in challenging situations; it’s about being able to face fears, make hard choices, and stand up for what’s right. It’s also about developing resilience when things don’t go as planned.
We introduced the character trait courage, through the story ‘When You Are Brave’ by Pat Zietlow Miller, an empowering story about a young girl who faces a daunting challenge and learns to find courage within herself.
Here at school, we are encouraging children to step out of their comfort zones—whether it’s trying something new in lessons, asking questions even when they feel unsure, or standing up for themselves or others in challenging situations.
Encourage Positive Risk-Taking: Let your child try new activities, even if they’re unsure at first. Whether it’s a new hobby or a tricky maths problem, guide them through the process and celebrate the effort, not just the result.
Model Courage: Share stories of your own experiences when you’ve had to be courageous, such as tackling a new job or speaking up about something important.
Talk About Emotions: Sometimes children feel scared or anxious about trying new things. Encourage open conversations about feelings and remind them it’s okay to feel nervous.
Praise Effort and Perseverance: Celebrate when your child takes a brave step, no matter how small. It might be raising their hand in class, trying out for a team, or making a new friend. Praise their effort and remind them that every courageous act helps them grow stronger.
Read Books That Feature Courage: Reading stories about characters who show courage can inspire children to do the same. Books like The Lion Inside by Rachel Bright or After the Fall by Dan Santat are great starting points for younger children.
Mastering times tables is a key step in every child’s maths journey. Knowing these facts by heart helps them solve problems faster and build confidence. It also lays the foundation for advanced topics like fractions and algebra. Times tables teach patterns and logic, benefiting all areas of learning. We use Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) to make practice fun. Children play games, compete with friends, and track their progress, turning learning into an exciting experience. Regular practice through TTRS boosts speed and accuracy, building lifelong maths skills. Younger learners can use Numbots to develop basics like number recognition and addition. New battles between classes, year groups, and families have been created, with results and standout performances to be shared in the next news roundup.
Here at Grange Park we offer many sporting opportunities which will always be documented on our Instagram page as well as our Newsround up. Here are some competitions that we are involved in this half term.

Extend Holiday Club
We are planning on providing a holiday club during the October half term from Monday 28th October to Friday 1st November 2024. The cost of the holiday club will be £27.50 per day and the timings will be 8:30 am- 6:00pm. Children will need to bring their own snacks and a packed lunch. Booking for the holiday club is now live on Arbor. The deadline for bookings is 4pm, Friday 18th October. Since there are limited spaces, payment is expected upon booking. This will ensure that your space is secured. You can also pay via taxfree childcare or childcare vouchers through your employer. For any other enquiries, contact Extend at extend@grangeparkprimary.org.
Lettings
Did you know you could hire the school for clubs or for a one off event? We have classrooms of varying sizes and halls within the school that can be used in the evenings after 4.30pm and on a Saturday until 2pm for clubs or children's parties. If you are interested in hiring a space please contact lettings@grangeparkprimary.org with details of your proposed club or event. We will then confirm cost and availability.
Enrichment Clubs
Enrichment clubs for the autumn term are now under way, with 31 options for children to explore beyond the classroom. From Spanish, arts, and crafts to sports, forestry, and debating, our clubs support personal development and enrich the curriculum.
Although the deadline for internal club sign-ups has passed, spaces are still available in Basketball, Debating, Yoga, Boys Football (Y5 & 6), and Netball. External clubs also have some openings. Don't miss the chance to join!
Clubs run from 3:25pm to 4:30pm, and children may bring a fruit or vegetable snack (no biscuits or crisps). For active clubs, PE kits are allowed. Finally, parents are invited to our Winter Showcase in the final week to see what the children have been working on.

Snack
All children are encouraged to bring in fruit and vegetable each day to have as a snack. Children in reception, year 1 and year 2 are provided with a fruit or vegetable under the government scheme, they can of course bring in an additional snack (fruit or vegetable) if they wish. If your child attends an enrichment club, your child can also bring in a fruit and vegetable to have after school. Please ensure children only bring in a piece of fruit or vegetable, which has been washed beforehand (no biscuits, cereal bars, cheeses or crisps).
Birthday Book
Just a reminder that you are welcome to donate a book to the class rather than sending sweets on your child’s birthday. The children across the school really enjoy reading these books. Teachers also put a sticker in the book to show who it's from.
Stationery
Just a reminder that we are asking children from Year 1- Year 6 to bring their own pencil case and stationery to school which many schools are requesting now. This enables children to take care and have a sense of responsibility for their own belongings. Please see the list with a link to Amazon to where you can order the items from:
1 x Clear pencil case (20cm X 12cm) e.g. Clear Pencil Case
1 x A glue stick e.g .Pritt Glue Stick
3 X HB pencils (Staedtler Noris/Yellow and Black HB) e.g. HB Pencils
1 x Purple pen (ball point) e.g. Purple Pens
3 x Whiteboard pens e.g. Whiteboard Pens.
1 x Black handwriting pen (Y4-Y6 only) e.g. Handwriting Pens
1 x Sharpener eg. Pencil Sharpener
1 x Rubber e.g. Rubber
Box of tissues for the classroom e.g. Tissues (this doesn't need to be labelled as it's for the classroom)
Items should be clearly labelled. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Meet the Teacher
It was lovely to see so many of you at our Meet the Teacher events last week. Please click the link below which leads to our website to access the slides that were shared with your year group.
Parking
Please be reminded that it is illegal to park your car on the yellow lines, white zig zags and 'school keep clear' markings outside the school and on the roundabout to drop off or pick up your child.
Please do not stop in the middle of the road to drop off your child and do drive slowly down Worlds End Lane. There are many parents who are stopping in the middle of the road to drop their children off (even young children) which is unsafe and is putting your child and others at risk. Please park your car in a safe place (parents can use Old Grammarian's RFC and Sainsbury's car park) and walk.
Please help us keep our children safe.
Parent Tours
It's that time of the year again when prospective parents can book a space on a school tour every Tuesday at 9:15am. Please pass this message onto any prospective parents!
Please ensure that children are not using the outdoor play equipment before or after school, their safety is our priority and children must not be using the equipment without teacher supervision. Thank you so much for your support!
Bicycles and Scooters
Bicycles and scooters can be left near the Year 5&6 Hub if your child attends an enrichment club at the end of the day. Please chain them up.

Information about MPVX
Currently in the UK, it is very unlikely that a child will develop MPVX. Whilst there have been cases among children in the UK since the first international outbreak in 2022, this has been among children living with an affected adult.

GPPSA News
Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising efforts last year! We raised approximately £22,000 towards the development of the Farm, the PA system and updates to the playground equipment. Thank you all so much for all of your support.
We are now in the new school year and will be holding our AGM on Monday the 30 September at 7pm in the round hall. Please click here to let us know you're coming. We are currently looking for new Chairs, a Co-Treasurer and new committee members. Please do come along to vote and show your support, as without these roles filled, the GPPSA cannot continue.
Our first event of the year was a picnic for nursery through to Year 1 on the 21st September. The kids had a great time on the inflatables and it was a great opportunity for parents and teachers to come together. Upcoming events over the next couple of months include our first Fireworks Display in collaboration with Merryhills Primary School on the 5th November, which is a sell out! Please keep your eye out for any limited tickets that may be available for sale in the next month. We also have some fun Halloween events and discos coming up in October! Be sure to book your disco tickets as soon as they are released as this event sells out quickly! And don’t forget the Christmas Fayre on 8 December. Our new Nursery class has been settling into life at Grange Park. The children have been busy making new friends, becoming familiar with daily routines, and exploring both their classroom and the wider school community. They even had the chance to greet our friendly chickens!
Reception has had a fantastic first week getting to know their learning environment, meeting new friends and bonding with their adults. Have a look at what they have been getting up to!
In science Year 1 discussed parts of the human body and identified different body parts. Next, we drew around one of our friends and labelled the body parts to complete our still life drawing. We also compared the size of our body parts in pairs e.g. our hands, feet, eye colour etc.
‘I really liked drawing around my friends, we are all different sizes even though we are the same age’ - Ayden - Grasshopper
‘We all compared hand sizes and we are all different’ - Aadam - Butterfly
Year 2 children took part in the "Kitten Rescue" science workshop, where they explored how different materials can keep a kitten warm. Through hands-on experiments, they tested materials like wool, cotton, and foil, learning about insulation and how it works. The children worked in teams to build the best "warm shelter" for the kitten, developing their problem-solving and teamwork skills.
In Science the children had the opportunity to dissect plants to investigate the different aspects that make a plant. After dissecting, children drew their own version and labelled each part, explaining the function and importance of each part.
Year 4 had a fantastic first week back, diving into the vibrant world of artist Romero Britto! We explored how graffiti, pop art and cubism influenced his art style.
Inspired by Brittos bold colours and patterns, the children created amazing big cat portraits - tigers, leopards, pumas and jaguars. They learned to draw a big cat’s face, create eye-catching details and use bright colours to make their artwork stand out. Everyone had fun expressing their creativity.
Year 5 pupils have been researching information about their class’ planet. They have also been using different art techniques with chalk such as pointillism, cross hatching and blending to create space themed art.
The Year 6 students kicked off the new school year by creating artwork inspired by their class's chosen artists: Kandinsky, Picasso, and Monet. They explored different artistic techniques to bring their creations to life, experimenting with Kandinsky's abstract forms, Picasso's bold cubist shapes, and Monet's delicate impressionist brushstrokes. Alongside their practical art projects, the students also delved into the lives and works of these famous artists, conducting research and writing detailed biographies that captured their unique styles and contributions to the world of art.
