Message from the Headteacher
Dear parents
What an exciting couple of weeks it’s been here at Grange Park! Last week, our Year 1 and Year 4 children were thrilled to come home with their new Chromebooks. The excitement was palpable, and we’ve already seen them being put to great use in the classroom. A huge thank you to those who have contributed to our voluntary donations via Arbor—we truly appreciate your generosity. If you haven’t donated yet and are able to, your support would make a real difference.
I hope you found yesterday’s Learning Conversations helpful. It’s always wonderful to hear how your child is progressing, and I know the teachers really enjoyed speaking with you and showing you the fantastic work in their books.
A big shoutout to the children who came in today dressed in spooky costumes or regular non-uniform—what a fun way to round off the week! This event, organised by the GPPSA, was a great success (along with the discos!), and I’m delighted to announce that Cheryl and Gaya have been appointed as the new co-chairs of the GPPSA. A very big thank you to Alexia and Sarah for all they have done in their roles as previous chairs. If you’re able to help out the GPPSA in any way, please do reach out to them—they’re always looking for more hands on deck.
It’s been a busy and exciting few weeks across the school. Our nursery children have been enthusiastically making cookies, and Reception have been exploring the wonderful story of Owl Babies—one of my personal favourites! Year 1 created delicious fruit salads, while Year 5 made Viking stew, using some of the produce from our allotments—delicious! Year 2 enjoyed an amazing trip to the London Eye, taking in some of London’s most famous landmarks. I was also blown away by the stunning artwork produced by Year 3, linked to their Natural Disasters project. Year 4 had an engaging science workshop which sparked their curiosity and gave them some fantastic hands-on experience.
Our Year 6 children had a blast on their school journey a couple of weeks ago, taking part in exciting activities such as abseiling, zip wire, and even laser tag! They had a wonderful time, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the incredible staff who went above and beyond to make this trip happen.
Finally, I’d like to thank you all for your continued support and hard work this term. I’m sure you’ll join me in thanking the staff here at Grange Park for their incredible efforts. Have a fantastic half-term and we look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday 5 November!
With my very best wishes.

Come Learn With Me Dates
Grange Park would like to welcome you into school for our Autumn Term Come Learn With Me event. This is an exciting opportunity for you to come into your child's classroom and join in with their activities! Please see the dates below:
As you are aware, access to and use of social media is common these days and has become second nature to many of us. With this in mind, we wanted to remind you of the advice we have previously sent out which is intended to help safeguard your children, yourselves as parents and the school.
Many of you are members of WhatsApp or other social media groups that connect parents in a particular class. The group chats are useful places to share information regarding your child’s day in school; receiving updates and reminders about school events; as well as sharing parenting advice.
These group chats can be a great resource and an enjoyable place to be in. However, as a school, we would like to ensure that they are being used appropriately and have come up with some suggested guidelines in order to prevent any miscommunication:
If you have a query or concern about the school, please talk to us directly.
Ensure that you do not discuss or instigate a discussion about a particular pupil, parent or staff member.
Ensure that you do not speak negatively about any pupils, parents or staff members at the school.
When writing a message on social media, remember that the content may be shared or forwarded onto others.
Do not share any pictures of pupils within the school; ensure that all pictures which you have taken at special events are used for your own personal use and not shared on any social media.
There is wide agreement among health professionals and educational professionals that school attendance is vital to the life chances of children and young people. Being in school improves health, wellbeing and socialisation throughout the life course. The greatest benefits come from children and young people attending school regularly.
It is usually appropriate for parents to send their children to school with mild respiratory illnesses. This would include general cold symptoms: a minor cough, runny nose or sore throat. However, children should not be sent to school if they have a temperature of 38°C or above. We have been encouraged to share the NHS ‘Is my child too ill for school?’ guidance with parents, which has further information. At Grange Park, we have additional measures in place such as:
- We monitor specific illnesses and communicate with specific parents (classes or year groups) when there has been an 'outbreak' as described by the Public Health agency.
- We have a rotation of cleaners in the morning, evening and in parts of the building throughout the day. Each space in the school is thoroughly cleaned at least once a day and deep cleaned when we feel it is necessary; for example when there are high levels of absence in a particular class or year group.
In addition to respiratory illnesses, we are aware that more children may be absent from school due to symptoms of anxiety than before the pandemic. Worry and mild or moderate anxiety, whilst sometimes difficult emotions, can be a normal part of growing up for many children and young people. Being in school can often help alleviate the underlying issues. A prolonged period of absence is likely to heighten a child’s anxiety about attending in the future, rather than reduce it. DfE has published useful guidance on mental health issues affecting a pupil’s attendance and those who are experiencing persistent symptoms can be encouraged to access additional support.
Help Your Child Succeed in School: Build the Habit of Good Attendance Early
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in nursery so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.
DID YOU KNOW?
Starting in nursery, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
Students can still fall behind if they miss just one or two days every few weeks.
Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
Keep your child healthy as much as you can.
Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbour, or another parent.
Schedule non-urgent related medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session.
If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
If you are concerned that your child may have a contagious illness, call your health care provider for advice.
Well done to our classes that achieved our whole school target of 97%, we are proud of you for this achievement. The winning class in this family is… Ash with an amazing result 98.4%, only 0.2% in the lead - Broomfield family, your overall score is also above 97%, keep up the great work!

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the way we work, play and communicate. While AI has potential to help solve complex problems, you've likely also heard serious concerns about it—and especially, the ways AI might change the lives of children and teens.
AI conversations can be significantly beneficial for kids:
They offer a unique, interactive way to learn and explore various subjects and each kid can learn in their own, personalised style.
Generative AI can help teachers customise their lesson plans to support different learning styles and students,
and kids can benefit from AI’s adaptive learning in their own studies as well.
Common worries about kids interacting with AI usually revolve around:
The risk of exposure to inappropriate content, privacy issues, and the potential impact AI can have on young developing minds.
AI can have a huge influence in kids’ lives and learning.
One of the biggest potential problems comes from the fact that AI is still a new technology, and it's based on machine learning. That means it pulls info from The Internet at large, so if not enough is done to screen that data, kids run a high risk of being exposed to inappropriate material, incorrect information, or misinformation.
Please talk to your children about AI, how to safely use it and to tell an adult if they feel uncomfortable by the content they see!
Grange Park has appointed a new team of Eco-Ambassadors to help the school minimise the impact the school’s activities have on the environment. The team this year is:
Year 6
Isabella - Kandinsky
Aanshi - Picasso
Year 5
Azaria - Neptune
Isabel - Mercury
Year 4
Adora - Leopard
Felicity - Puma
Year 3
Grace - Oak
Coraline - Ash
They will be working hard on a number of projects across the year including adding nesting boxes for Swifts, planting fruit trees, an Environmental Review and Action plan, the Big Bird Watch and recycling and energy-saving schemes. Please look out for news of these initiatives and get in touch if you think you can help in any way. The Eco-Ambassadors monitored the school's recycling systems and presented an assembly about it last week.
World Mental Health Day - Thursday 7 October 2024
During the week of the 7 October, we celebrated World Mental Health Day, focusing on the importance of wellbeing, including in the workplace (our school) which was this year’s theme. To mark the occasion, the children enjoyed their first "Brain School" assembly, where they started learning all about the amazing functions of the brain! The assembly helped the students understand how different parts of their brain work together to help them think, feel, and learn. This is just the beginning of an exciting journey as we continue exploring mental health and wellbeing in fun, age-appropriate ways. Do ask them what part of their brain they are using when making their best decision or when they are swinging on the monkey bars. We’re very proud of how well the children engaged with this, and we’re excited to build on this important foundation! Here are some videos that were shared with the children, just in case you would like to learn more too.
We are delighted to inform you that our school has been actively celebrating Black History Month. Recently, we held a special assembly to recognise this important occasion. Additionally, posters were created to raise awareness about some lesser-known but significant figures in our history. We believe these activities are crucial in educating our students about the rich and diverse contributions of Black individuals to our society.
After an exciting round of applications, shortlisting, and presentations to their families, we are pleased to announce that six new members have been elected to our school parliament. The election was held with the participation of all students from Year 1 to Year 6. Each candidate had the opportunity to present their ideas and share what they could bring to the role with their families before the children cast their votes at the ballot boxes. The votes were carefully counted and verified, and we are thrilled to reveal our new MP’s:
Broomfield - Olivia and Deniz
Oakwood - Yavuz and Aisel
Trent - Margot and Emily
To ensure Grovelands children fully participated in the election process, they cast their votes for Broomfield representatives. With no Year 6 class in this family, the Year 5 class councillors from Grovelands will be stepping into a more prominent role this year. Class councillors have presented their manifestos to their peers, and after a vote, each class has now elected its own representative. We look forward to our first meeting and to the exciting work ahead as we collaborate to enhance the lives of the children at Grange Park.
We are extremely lucky at Grange Park that all children from Year 1 upwards have their very own chromebook.
Click here to hear how we use chromebooks for supporting retrieval practice.
Some parents have generously contributed to our voluntary donations to support education here at Grange Park Primary school. There is no fixed amount, donations are entirely discretionary and any amount is sincerely appreciated. Simply log onto Arbor - School Shop - Voluntary donations to school.

We are thrilled to announce that through the collective hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm of our entire school community, our schools have been awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) Gilt Award!
This award is a recognition of our ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality science education across our school. It celebrates the innovative teaching approaches and exciting opportunities we offer to engage our pupils in the wonders of science. From hands-on experiments to curiosity-driven lessons, our school has worked tirelessly to inspire a love for science in all our students.
Receiving the Gilt Award means that we have demonstrated excellent classroom practice, and have had a positive impact on our pupils' learning. We are incredibly proud of this achievement and look forward to continuing our journey of exploration, discovery, and learning in the world of science!
Message from Scoffi Coffee
Dear Parents and Teachers,
I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for all the support you’ve shown Scoffi over the past year. Your encouragement, patronage and kind words have been the fuel that keeps us going and I hope I’ve lived up your expectations. Oh…and please remember that each time you spend at Scoffi a small portion goes directly back to the school. Your support helps fund equipment and educational resources, so every cup or bite you buy makes a difference! I’m excited to announce that we will be soon moving in to a bigger kiosk. This will enable us to offer a much more varied menu, including new drinks & smoothies, a delicious range of treats, more adventurous lunches as well as an exciting ‘Grab’n’Go’ breakfast menu.
Finally, this wouldn’t have been possible without the Grange Park community and I’m truly thankful to each of you for helping this project grow. I look forward to continuing to serve you at our new space and hope to see you there soon!
Warm regards,
John Dervish

Parking
Please be reminded that it is illegal to park your car on the yellow lines, white zig zags and 'school keep clear' markings outside the school and on the roundabout to drop off or pick up your child. Please do not stop in the middle of the road to drop off your child and do drive slowly down Worlds End Lane. There are many parents who are stopping in the middle of the road to drop their children off (even young children) which is unsafe and is putting your child and others at risk. Please park your car in a safe place (parents can use Old Grammarian's RFC and Sainsbury's car park) and walk. Please help us keep our children safe.

Our nursery children have been exploring the outdoors on nature walks, collecting natural materials to enrich our learning environment. They had a wonderful time using these treasures to create beautiful nature portraits. As we continue getting to know one another, we've been playing exciting parachute games, helping us learn each other's names while having fun together.
The children in Reception have had an exciting start to their English lessons! We have been exploring the story ‘Owl Babies’, and it has quickly become a year group favourite. The children have shown a great love and enthusiasm for the story, engaging with it in various creative ways.
In our lessons, the children have been learning 'Talk for Writing' actions. These actions are helping them to use story language confidently and retell key parts of the story.
The creativity doesn’t stop there! They have also been busy making their own stick puppets, books, and pictures inspired by the story. We are so proud of their efforts and can’t wait to see how their love for storytelling continues to grow!
Our Year 1 pupils got creative in Design Technology by making a delicious fruit feast! The children carefully selected and arranged a variety of fruits, practising their cutting skills using small knives and peelers. Under supervision, they learned basic slicing and chopping techniques, while also working with utensils like spoons and knives to make their fruit into colourful fruit salads. It was a wonderful way to combine creativity, healthy eating, and practical life skills. Well done to our Year 1 pupils for their fantastic fruit creations!
‘I carefully held the knife as I sliced the grapes’ - Roche - Grasshopper
‘I enjoyed chopping the banana, it was soft’ - George - Dragonfly
‘I squeezed the orange’ - Tylan - Butterfly
‘It was very tasty’ - Ervis - Ladybird
Year 2 recently visited the London Eye as part of their Learning Quest topic. The children were thrilled to see iconic sights such as The Shard, St. Paul's Cathedral, and the Houses of Parliament from their high vantage point. This exciting trip helped bring their studies to life, giving them a deeper understanding of London's skyline and history.
Stephanie Peters artist linked to our natural disasters topic in geography
We have been studying the work of Stephanie Peters who is an artist inspired by natural disasters. She uses an abstract style to imitate natural disasters such as earthquakes, avalanches and wildfires.
We have been exploring the colour palette that she used to create a piece called liquid flame.
To start planning our final composition, we practised tree outlines using charcoal. We explored different ways to use the charcoal in order to create different shapes, lines and textures.
In an exciting science workshop, Year 4 students explored the effects of salt on water. Working in pairs, they experimented by adding salt to clean water, observing how many spoonfuls it took for the water to become saturated. The workshop also included a demonstration on how to purify salt water through condensation, turning it back into clean water. The hands-on experience sparked curiosity and deepened their understanding of scientific concepts.
Viking Stew
The children have showcased their culinary skills by chopping, slicing and dicing the vegetables to create their flavoursome viking stews.
Scientific Experiments
In science this term, the children have conducted many experiments. They have explored the effects of air resistance and water resistance on different objects. The children have also investigated the effects of friction.
Orienteering in P.E.
Within the P.E. lessons, the children have been busy using their map reading skills to orienteer around the school whilst completing different challenges.
This half term, Year 6 embarked on an unforgettable adventure at PGL, filled with excitement and challenges! From the thrill of abseiling down towering walls and scaling climbing towers to the adrenaline rush of the zipwire, every moment was packed with adventure. They bravely tackled the trapeze, soared to new heights on Jacob’s ladder and navigated the twists and turns of the tunnel trails. Laser tag brought out their competitive sides, as they worked in teams to outsmart their opponents. After a day full of action, the fun didn’t stop! Evenings were spent around a roaring campfire, sharing stories and laughter, taking part in a high-energy PGL tournament and sneaking through the woods during ambush games. The week ended with a lively disco, where everyone danced the night away. It was an action-packed experience that challenged and inspired, leaving Year 6 with memories they’ll treasure forever.
