Dear parents
This half term has been filled with exciting learning and achievements across the school. From creative storytelling and scientific investigations to artistic projects and well-being workshops, children have been engaged in a wide range of enriching activities. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and curiosity shine.
We also had a brilliant World Book Week, filled with inspiring author visits and a book fair where children discovered fantastic new stories. Our Readathon is in full swing, raising money to stock our Reading Hub with books that children are eager to read. Thank you to all the families who have supported this initiative—whether by sponsoring a child via our JustGiving page, donating books, or contributing via our Amazon wishlist, your support is helping to create a love of reading across the school.
Alongside this, we have seen incredible sporting achievements, with our Y3/4 girls' football team who won the Enfield borough tournament and will now represent Enfield at the London Youth Games and our Y5/6 girls' football team who won the Enfield borough tournament and will be representing Enfield at the regional finals at Tottenham Hotspur FC training ground- we wish them all the best!
Finally, we still have a Parent Governor vacancy, and it would be fantastic to see more interest. If you’d like to get involved, please complete the application form by Monday 17 March 2025. We look forward to welcoming a new parent governor to our governing body!
With my very best wishes
Tijen Hassan
Headteacher
We want to support the health and well-being of all children in our school, and we appreciate your help in keeping our school community as healthy as possible. Knowing when to keep your child at home due to illness and when they can attend school can sometimes be tricky, so we hope this guidance makes it easier for you.
When to Keep Your Child at Home: (For a comprehensive guide, please refer to the NHS guidelines: nhs.uk)
High Temperature (Fever): If your child has a high temperature, they should remain at home until it returns to normal.
Diarrhoea and Vomiting: Children should stay home for 48 hours after their last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting.
Chickenpox: Keep your child off school until all spots have crusted over, typically about five days after they first appeared.
Children with mild symptoms can attend school if they feel well enough.
We will continue to encourage regular handwashing and proper tissue disposal while they are with us. The school environment is cleaned daily, this includes cleaning tables, wiping down handles, vacuuming the floors, and mopping all laminate floor areas. In addition to the daily cleaning, the whole school has a deep clean periodically.
Thank you for your support in keeping our school community healthy. By working together, we can help ensure that all children feel their best and are ready to learn and enjoy their time at school.
According to Ofcom’s most recent Media Use and Attitudes Report, roughly 55% of 3-17-year-olds in the UK are using WhatsApp as their primary messaging service Not only does that make WhatsApp the most popular messaging platform among children and young people in the UK; it also means that of the app’s approximately three billion users, over seven million of them are British youngsters – keeping in touch with friends and family, but also being exposed to its various risks
As parents and educators, it’s our responsibility to stay up-to-date on the safety concerns around this highly popular app, and know how to protect children and young people who are on the platform This expert-led free guide, breaks down WhatsApp’s most prominent risks and advises you on how best to safeguard the app’s younger users.
Our character trait for this half term is a trait that can help us all to grow: Collaboration. To introduce this half term’s character trait, Tijen read the children the story of ‘Tidy’ by Emily Gravett.
Emily Gravett's "Tidy" tells the story of Pete the badger, who becomes increasingly obsessed with keeping his forest environment perfectly clean. Pete the badger's initial tidying of leaves and flowers spirals into an obsessive destruction of the forest, as he removes trees and paves the ground with concrete. Upon realizing the devastation he's caused, the story suggests a need for collective restoration and the animals work together to fix the problem.
During the assembly we discussed what is meant by ‘collaboration’; sharing my ideas as well as listening to others' ideas, and helping to reach a common goal.
How parents can encourage collaboration at home:
Lead by example: Participate in community projects or volunteer activities as a family.
Talk about it: Hold regular family meetings to discuss plans and make decisions together.
Fun times: Play board games or work on puzzles that require teamwork and cooperation.
Through collaboration, our children:
Develop social skills: As they learn to communicate effectively, negotiate, compromise, and resolve conflicts.
Foster teamwork: By understanding the importance of working together towards a common goal and appreciating diverse perspectives.
Develop empathy and understanding: They learn to listen to and respect others' viewpoints, fostering a sense of community and inclusivity.
Have an increase in confidence and self-esteem: Contributing to a team's success can increase a child's sense of accomplishment and belonging.
Are more prepared for future success: Collaboration is a crucial skill in academic, professional, and social settings.
Have a sense of shared responsibility: They learn that they are part of a larger whole, and that their actions impact others.
We had a fantastic World Book Week at Grange Park Primary School! Reception and KS1 enjoyed a visit from author Agnieszka Migew, while KS2 met Clare Povey, who led a brilliant Year 6 workshop on creating the ultimate villain.
Throughout the week, children took part in live lessons, bringing books to life in exciting ways. We also had a wonderful Book Fair, where all the children explored a range of fantastic new stories. The celebrations ended with a fun World Book Day dress-up day on Thursday 6 March, where many children and adults came as their favourite book characters.
A huge thank you to our visiting authors and everyone who took part—what a fantastic week of celebrating reading!
Our Anti-bullying Ambassadors have been hard at work, brainstorming and collaborating on initiatives to earn the "Anti-Bullying badges."
Their efforts are particularly focused on a positive and inclusive school environment. A key outcome of their recent meetings has been the organisation of "Friendly Fridays," a wonderful continuation of the positive spirit fostered during Children's Mental Health Week last half term.
These events aim to promote kindness, connection, and a sense of belonging for all our children.
In the last few weeks, our Reception and Year 1 children both enjoyed a cosy and charming ‘Reading Pyjamarama’ event at Grange Park. Dressed in their pyjamas and comfy clothes, they listened to stories read by different members of the reading team, bringing fresh voices to beloved tales. The experience was made even more special with a warm cup of hot chocolate and a biscuit. It was a wonderful celebration of storytelling and the joy of reading. Thank you to everyone who made this event a success!
This week, we have absolutely loved welcoming parents and carers into school for our Come Learn with Me sessions! It has been fantastic to see families learning together about how our brains work and how we can manage our feelings. Thank you to everyone who joined us – your enthusiasm and engagement made the sessions so special!
During the sessions, children explored the idea of the Upstairs and Downstairs Brain and learned about Flipping the Lid (using our hand-brain model to understand big emotions). We also introduced the Window of Tolerance to KS2 – the space where we feel calm, focused, and ready to learn. The children thought about what helps them stay inside their window and practised different regulation strategies, such as deep breathing, movement breaks, and grounding techniques.
If you weren’t able to attend or would like to revisit the learning, we have shared some of the slides used in our sessions. You can find them here KS1 and KS2
Top Tips for Supporting Emotional Regulation at Home:
✅ Help your child name their feelings – "I can see you're feeling frustrated right now."
✅ Practise deep breathing together – try balloon breaths or finger tracing breathing.
✅ Use a Feelings Traffic Light linked to the Zones of Regulation to check in daily (Blue = sad/tired Green = calm/happy, Yellow = worried/frustrated, Red = angry/panicked).
✅ Model regulation – show your child how you use calming strategies when feeling stressed.
Thank you again for being part of these sessions. We hope you found them useful and enjoyable! If you have any feedback or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
We are extremely lucky at Grange Park that all children from Year 1 upwards have their very own chromebook.
Click here to hear how we use chromebooks for supporting retrieval practice.
Some parents have generously contributed to our voluntary donations to support education here at Grange Park Primary school. There is no fixed amount, donations are entirely discretionary and any amount is sincerely appreciated. Simply log onto Arbor - School Shop - Voluntary donations to school.
At the end of last half term we celebrated our ‘Always Stars’. ‘Always Star’ children are children who ALWAYS show that they follow the Big 3, they are ALWAYS respectful, resilient and show responsibility and they ALWAYS try their very best, taking on challenges with a growth mindset and never giving up. Here are the Always Stars’ for the first half of the autumn term.

Outstanding Achievement in the Primary Maths Challenge
After excelling in the Primary Maths Challenge, three of our talented children scored so highly that they qualified for the prestigious bonus round. A huge congratulations to Ihsan, Cayden and Mira for their fantastic achievement!
A special shout-out goes to Ihsan, who achieved an impressive score of 23 out of 25, earning a silver award and securing his place among the top young mathematicians in the country.
We are incredibly proud of all the children who took part — well done to everyone for their hard work and dedication!
Wow, what an amazing series of achievements! Congratulations to both the Y3/4 girls' football team who won the Enfield borough tournament and will now represent Enfield at the London Youth Games. And to the Y5/6 girls' football team who won the Enfield borough tournament and will be representing Enfield and Grange Park at the regional finals at Tottenham Hotspur FC training ground. – it's incredible to see their hard work paying off.
And let's not forget about the Y3/4 cross country team heading to Lee Valley – it's fantastic to see so many of the teams representing their schools, clubs, and local areas with pride. Best of luck to all the athletes competing! You’ve already made everyone so proud, and we can't wait to see what you'll achieve next!

Comic Relief 2025
This year marks 40 years since Comic Relief began, and to celebrate, we’re partying like it’s 1985! On Friday 21 March, children are invited to come in for a £1 donation, dressed for joy, wearing comic relief merchandise or ready for an ’80s disco.
At lunchtime on Friday 21 March, we’ll be bringing the decade to life with 80s music and dancing on the playground—it’s time to have fun and make a difference!
Donations can be a cash payment sent in with your child on the day given to their class teacher or the members of School Parliament who will be collecting by the front gates. Alternatively, you may wish to use our Just Giving page.

We are really looking forward to recognising and supporting this important cause with you!
Readathon
We are excited to announce the return of our sponsored Readathon, raising money for much-needed new books in our Reading Hub! Recently, a team of wonderful parent volunteers helped us sort through the Reading Hub clearing out old books — some dating back to the 1950s! This has left us with lots of empty shelves, ready to be filled with fresh, exciting titles.
Your child should have come home with a sponsorship form so please look out for it! As well as helping to fill our shelves, children will have the chance to win fantastic prizes. Thanks to the GPPSA, there are six £20 book vouchers up for grabs — two lucky readers will be chosen at random from each phase: EYFS, KS1, and KS2. Whether your child loves magical adventures, thrilling mysteries, or fascinating facts, every page they read brings them closer to winning a prize!
How does it work?
All children have to do is:
● Read, read, read!
● Ask a trusted adult/someone they know to sponsor them by filling out the sponsorship form.
There are lots of ways you can support:
Sponsor your child — you can send cash donations into school or contribute through our JustGiving page.
Buy a book to donate — we’ve asked the children what books they’d love to see in the Reading Hub, and you can purchase these directly from our Amazon wishlist . Please remember to set the delivery address to: Grange Park Primary School, Worlds End Lane, London N21 1PP.
Donate pre-loved books — if you’re having a clear out, we’d love to give good-quality books a new home in our Reading Hub.
Thank you for your support — together we can make this year’s Readathon a huge success and fill our shelves with books our children are excited to read!
TCS Mini London Marathon 2025
We are pleased to announce that an opportunity has arisen for a limited number of children to participate in the TCS Mini London Marathon on Saturday 26 April 2025. The event, held on part of the London Marathon route, will give the children the experience of running, jogging or walking past Buckingham Palace and over the world-famous finish line at The Mall.
Entry is free and every child who finishes will receive a TCS Mini London Marathon medal and as well as this TCS will donate £10 to the school. Parents/Carers would be required to bring their child to this event and escort them to the start line and then collect them from the finish line.
Children in Year 3 and above can run on their own. Whilst children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 will require an adult for every 8 children. Unfortunately, we will not be able to secure tickets for all parents to run alongside their children but there will be members of staff attending who will escort the children along the route. Depending on numbers we may also be asking for parent volunteers to fulfil this role too. If you would like to do this, please indicate on the form and we will confirm nearer the time.
This time we will be entering children in Rec, Y1, Y2 and Y3 into the one mile event and Y4, Y5 and Y6 will take part in the 2.6K event.
We have only 25 registered spaces in the one mile event and 15 in the 2.5K event so places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis and those that have never taken part in this event before will be given priority. If your child would like to take part and you are able to accompany them, please complete the attached google form. If you have more than one child, you will need to complete a form for each child.

Lettings
Did you know you could hire the school for clubs or for a one off event? We have classrooms of varying sizes and halls within the school that can be used in the evenings after 4.30pm and on a Saturday until 2pm for clubs or children's parties. If you are interested in hiring a space please contact lettings@grangeparkprimary.org with details of your proposed club or event. We will then confirm cost and availability.
Parking
Please be reminded that it is illegal to park your car on the yellow lines, white zig zags and 'school keep clear' markings outside the school and on the roundabout to drop off or pick up your child.
Please do not stop in the middle of the road to drop off your child and do drive slowly down Worlds End Lane. There are many parents who are stopping in the middle of the road to drop their children off (even young children) which is unsafe and is putting your child and others at risk. Please park your car in a safe place (parents can use Old Grammarian's RFC and Sainsbury's car park) and walk.
Please help us keep our children safe.
Stationery Reminder
Just a reminder that we are asking children from Year 1- Year 6 to bring their own pencil case and stationery to school which many schools are requesting now. This enables children to take care and have a sense of responsibility for their own belongings. Please see the list with a link to Amazon to where you can order the items from:
1 x Clear pencil case (20cm X 12cm) e.g. Clear Pencil Case
1 x A glue stick e.g .Pritt Glue Stick

Shoeshare Scheme
As part of our efforts to support charity and fundraising, we are excited to inform you about the Shoeshare Scheme run by Clarks, which we will be participating in. The Shoeshare Scheme encourages people to donate unwanted shoes that are still in relatively good condition. These shoes will be collected and taken to our local Clarks store, where they will be sent to those in need, both in the UK and abroad. It's a great way for us to give back to our community and support people who may be less fortunate. A donation box will be placed next to the lost property boxes in the school, where you can drop off any unwanted shoes. We kindly ask that the shoes are in good condition and can be paired together. When Should You Bring Them In? The donation box will be available from Monday 17th March. We would really appreciate your support in this fantastic initiative. By working together, we can help raise awareness for charity and contribute to a worthwhile cause.
New Gutters!
You may have noticed that we have replaced most of the downpipes and guttering in classrooms leading to the playgrounds. This was a much-needed upgrade, and we hope it will help prevent leaks and improve drainage!

Our nursery children have been celebrating the gorgeous spring weather by creating their own observational drawings and paintings of daffodils. They carefully studied the colours and shapes they could see. “It's long, and I can see a circle,” Kai observed, while Maya noted, “The petals are soft.” Taking their time to observe and sketch, the children then selected their own materials to bring their artwork to life, choosing from oil pastels, coloured pencils and watercolours.
In Reception the children have been learning about sequences. They have been discussing events and how they happen in a certain order. They know that the order of things is called a sequence. The children looked at lots of different examples of this including days of the week, times of the day and we also talked about the order of activities that we participate in during a school day. To consolidate the children’s understanding of sequence, we decided to make some sandwiches! We used bread, cheese, jam and butter. We talked about the sequence of making a sandwich and which parts came first, next and after that…. The children were able to follow instructions to do this.
Year 1 children were immersed in the vibrant world of 'Supertato,' showcasing their comprehension through active retelling. They explored characters, settings, and key events, bringing the narrative to life in lively discussions.
‘I can retell the story’ - Kaia - Butterfly
‘I liked drawing the characters’ - Cooper - Grasshopper
‘I know the main characters of the story’ - Matilda - Ladybird
‘I liked listening to the story’ - Amelia - Dragonfly
This term, Year 2 have been learning all about what seeds need to grow. We have been planting cress in cotton wool and experimenting with different growing conditions to see what happens. Some seeds have been placed in sunlight, while others have been kept in the dark, and we are carefully observing the results. The children have loved making predictions and checking on their plants each day. We can’t wait to see which conditions help our seeds grow best!
This half term, Year 3 have been inspired by the David Walliams book, Gangsta Granny. In the book, Ben’s boring Granny turns out to have a stash of jewels in her biscuit tin and is, in fact, an international jewel thief. They had fantastic ideas for a new object that could be found - everything from a suitcase full of money, to Tutankhamun’s golden mask.
They enjoyed creating mind-maps and storyboards. Now they are excited to act out their stories before they write them.
In our art lessons, the focus has been on mastering the art of figure drawing. The children have been learning how to observe and represent the human form, paying close attention to proportions and movement. We’ve worked on sketching techniques, focusing on capturing a pose. The children have shown remarkable progress in their ability to present the human figure.
In Year 5, our History lessons have been focused on the monarchy, exploring how the actions of past monarchs continue to influence our lives today. We have taken inspiration from Hans Holbein the Younger, the renowned artist for King Henry VIII, to create our own striking portraits. Using a combination of drawing, painting and collage, the children have carefully considered detail, colour and expression to bring their artwork to life. They have also examined the significance of portraiture in history, discussing how images were used to convey power, status and influence.
In Science, we have been investigating the properties of materials, with a particular focus on solubility. Through hands-on experiments, the children have tested different substances to determine which solids dissolve in water. They have made predictions, recorded observations and engaged in thoughtful discussions about solubility and chemical changes. Their curiosity and enthusiasm have been evident and they are eager to apply their learning to real-world contexts.
Across all subjects, the children have demonstrated remarkable creativity, curiosity and teamwork. It has been fantastic to see them so engaged, and we look forward to continuing these exciting topics in the weeks ahead!
Our Year 6 children participated in a special 'Moment of Calm' workshop designed to help manage stress and anxiety. The workshop focused on preparing for the transition to secondary school and upcoming SATs. The children learned valuable strategies and tips to stay calm and focused during these important times. It was a great opportunity for everyone to share their thoughts and support each other!
