CREDITS FOR PROMOTION
All high school students are classified as members of a particular class as of the first day of each school year. In order to be considered for reclassification at the end of an odd numbered semester, the student must have administrator approval and an approved graduation plan. This policy does not apply to UIL eligibility. Students will be promoted based on total credits.

Graham ISD calculates a grade point average (GPA) based on converted grade percentages earned in eligible courses to points in accordance with the following chart:

The calculation of GPA used for class rank shall exclude grades earned in or by:
Physical education or athletics
A local credit course
Credit by examination, with or without prior instruction
Distance learning
Summer school
Any course through the District Learning Center, or the District School-Within-A-School program
High School courses taken prior to 9th grade
GPA CALCULATION/CLASS RANK
In accordance with Title 19 Texas Administrative Code (TAC), §5.5(e), high school rank for students seeking automatic admission to a general academic teaching institution on the basis of class rank is determined and reported as follows:
Class rank shall be based on the end of the 11th grade, middle of the 12th grade, or at high school graduation, whichever is most recent at the application deadline.
The top 10 percent of a high school class shall not contain more than 10 percent of the total class size.
The student's rank shall be reported by the applicant's high school or school district as a specific number out of a specific number total class size.
Class rank shall be determined by the school or school district from which the student graduated or is expected to graduate.
GPA will be calculated at the end of each semester for grades 9-12 and class rank will be assigned accordingly. All coursework completed after the closing day of said semester will be included in the following semester’s calculation.
EARLY GRADUATION
Students who are planning to graduate early need to have a request form (signed by a parent or guardian) on file in the counselor’s office by the first day of classes of graduation year
The request must be approved by a counselor or the high school principal
Students considering early graduation need to visit with a counselor prior to the beginning of their last year of high school
Students applying for early graduation must take the initiative to learn about graduation requirements and accept responsibility for meeting all of the requirements
A student completing graduation requirements in fewer than eight semesters shall be assigned a class rank based upon the relation of the student’s numerical average to the numerical averages of the students completing graduation requirements in eight semesters
No eight-semester graduate ranked in the top three shall be displaced by the rank of a three-year graduate
VALEDICTORIAN/SALUTATORIAN/DISTINGUISHED HONOR STUDENT
The valedictorian and salutatorian shall be the eligible students with the highest and second highest ranking, respectively. To be eligible for such recognition, a student must:
Have been continuously enrolled in Graham High School for the four semesters immediately preceding graduation;
Must have completed the requirements for the Distinguished Level of Achievement Program for graduation; and be graduating after exactly eight semesters of enrollment in high school
The distinguished honor student shall be the eligible student with the third highest ranking. To be eligible for such recognition, a student must:
Have been continuously enrolled in Graham High School for the four semesters immediately preceding graduation
Have completed the requirements for the Distinguished Level Of Achievement Program for graduation and be graduating after exactly eight semesters of enrollment in high school
HONOR GRADUATES
Students achieving high standards of academic excellence shall be recognized at graduation.
Students who have maintained a 3.0 or above grade point average and have completed the Distinguished Level of Achievement Program and were enrolled in at least one academically weighted course during each of their last two years at GHS shall be recognized as honor graduates
