Advanced Quantitative Reasoning

ADQUAN

In Advanced Quantitative Reasoning, students will develop and apply skills necessary for college, careers, and life. Course content consists primarily of applications of high school mathematics concepts to prepare students to become well-educated and highly informed 21st century citizens. Students will develop and apply reasoning, planning, and communication to make decisions and solve problems in applied situations involving numerical reasoning, probability, statistical analysis, finance, mathematical selection, and modeling with algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and discrete mathematics.

TYPE: Standard

GRADE: 11-12

PREREQUISITE: ALG1 - Algebra I or GEOMPA - Pre-AP Geometry or GEOM - Geometry or ALG2 - Algebra II or ALG2PA - Pre-AP Algebra II

Algebraic Reasoning

ALGREA

In Algebraic Reasoning, students will build on the knowledge and skills for mathematics in Kindergarten-Grade 8 and Algebra I, continue with the development of mathematical reasoning related to algebraic understandings and processes, and deepen a foundation for studies in subsequent mathematics courses. Students will broaden their knowledge of functions and relationships, including linear, quadratic, square root, rational, cubic, cube root, exponential, absolute value, and logarithmic functions. Students will study these functions through analysis and application that includes explorations of patterns and structure, number and algebraic methods, and modeling from data using tools that build to workforce and college readiness such as probes, measurement tools, and software tools, including spreadsheets.

College Algebra/Statistics

ALGCO

Students are required to meet the admission requirements of the sponsoring community college or university, pay all college tuition, fees, and may be responsible for the textbook for the college course. Part of the student admission requirement is to take and meet the standards of the TSI or meet the exemption of the test by having qualifying scores on the Reading, Writing and Math sections of the Exit Level TAKS/EOC, ACT or SAT scores. Students will receive college credit and high school credit/or satisfactory performance in the course. It is ultimately the responsibility of the parents and students to meet all deadlines for the admission process in order to schedule students into the appropriate classes.

Students will complete a course of study in College Algebra the first semester and in College Statistics the second semester. The course will fulfill the TEKS for Pre-AP Pre-Calculus, so that the student is prepared to take AP Calculus or higher-level mathematics in college. Students should confirm with the college they plan to attend that this credit will transfer.

TYPE: Dual Credit

GRADE: 11-12

PREREQUISITE: Algebra II or Pre-AP Algebra II and Pre-Calculus or Pre-AP Pre-Calculus

Financial Math

FNMATH

Financial Mathematics is a course about personal money management. Students will apply critical-thinking skills to analyze personal financial decisions based on current and projected economic factors. It will integrate career and postsecondary education planning into financial decision-making. Students are expected become successful problem solvers and use mathematics efficiently and effectively in daily life. Students will apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace. Students will use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution.

AP Pre-Calculus

CALAP

This is an advanced placement course that provides the student with a college curriculum. It is for college bound students who plan to enter a college program requiring a strong mathematical background. A student who successfully completes this course will be qualified to take an Advanced Placement Test administered by the College Board. If the student scores an adequate grade on the test he/she may be awarded 3hours of college credit in calculus in most U.S. colleges and universities.  This course combines trigonometry, elementary analysis, and analytical geometry. Topics include polynomial functions, rational functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, circular and trigonometric functions, vectors and complex numbers. Emphasis will be placed on higher level thinking skills and independent research. This course is preparation for AP Calculus
