A Sweet Volume

The purpose of this activity is to use polynomials to design a container for a jumbo chocolate bar. The container has to be built using a 22”x28” cardstock sheet, and its dimensions must give the maximum volume possible. The container has be a trapezoidal prism, and the trapezoidal face an isosceles trapezoid, with acute angles of 60o. The built container has to be decorated as it were a real chocolate bar. Calculations and graphs can be done in MS-Excel, Google Sheets, or in a TI-Nspire.

Students create a poster including the geometric net used, procedures, calculated dimensions, and pictures of the finished chocolate bar. Model and results have to be presented and explained in class. Alternatively the model and a video-presentation with the procedure and results can be delivered.
