Course Description
This course introduces the major concepts and tools used to collect, analyze, and draw conclusions from data, focusing on exploring data, probability and simulation, and statistical inference. It is equivalent to a one-semester, non-calculus introductory college statistics course. The course can be divided in five main Units:
Unit 1. Exploring One-Variable Data and Collecting Data: Organizing data with graphs and numbers, planning surveys, and designing experiments.
Unit 2. Probability, Random Variables, and Probability Distributions: Understanding randomness, probability rules, and expected values.
Unit 3. Inference for Categorical Data (Proportions): Creating confidence intervals and running significance tests for proportions.
Unit 4. Inference for Quantitative Data (Means): Analyzing means using t-procedures and confidence intervals.
Unit 5. Regression Analysis: Studying the relationship between two quantitative variables using scatterplots and linear regression.
It is expected that by the end of this course students have developed the next skills:
Formulate Questions: Build investigative questions to guide a statistical study.
Collect Data: Design proper methods for sampling and experiments.
Analyze Data: Make graphs and calculate numerical summaries.
Interpret Results: Explain what data means and justify conclusions
Course Scope and Sequence
This year, Galena Park High School officially transitions to the 5 X 5 accelerated schedule, creating exciting new opportunities for you. This schedule will provide greater flexibility while allowing you to accelerate your learning, recover credits when needed, and pursue additional coursework aligned with your college and career goals.
Most importantly, it gives an opportunity to personalize your learning and ensure you have the support you need to succeed.
So, under this new structure, all above Units should be covered in one semester on a daily class base, about 80 minutes long. The planned sequence of this course is shown below:
The AP Statistics Test
This course prepares students to take this College Board test, technically obtaining credit for a College Statistics class when making a score of 3 or more. However, Colleges and Universities may decide the specific type of credit for these test scores, many colleges award credit or advanced placement for a score of 3 or higher (let you skip an introductory statistics course), other grant general elective credit only, while more selective schools may require a 4 or 5, or grant no credit at all. You can check (click on link) how specific schools evaluate these scores using the AP Credit Policy Search tool provided by the College Board
The Test scores are given on a 5-point scale:
5: Extremely well qualified
4: Well qualified
3: Qualified
2: Possibly qualified
1: No recommendation
The test has the next structure:
Section I (Multiple Choice): 42 questions in 90 minutes, accounting for 50% of the score.
Section II (Free Response): 4 open-ended questions in 90 minutes, accounting for 50% of the score.
A graphing calculator with statistical capabilities is required for both sections
A: 90% ≤ score
B: 80% ≤ score < 90%
C: 75% ≤ score < 80%
D: 70% ≤ score < 75%
F: score < 70%
Homeworks are extremely important in this course. Remember, this is a College level clas, and at this level, one hour class demands two or three hours of extra work, studying and practicing.
The high school semester schedule follows a six-weeks grading period rather than a nine-weeks layout. The exact weight of each individual six-weeks grading block toward your final semester average is calculated as follows:
1st Six Weeks Grade: 28%
2nd Six Weeks Grade: 28%
3rd Six Weeks Grade: 29%
Semester Final Exam: 15%
Final Exams are mandatory, and are an opportunity to improve your final grade. These exams will include all the subjects covered during the semester, but tests could have more emphasis on the last chapters, if these chapters are considered important. A request for a make-up final exam should be done to me and will be programmed extra class.

Work Ethics and Make-Up Work
Assignments are expected to be completed on time. These are an important part of your grade. Consistent progress in your assignments is imperative to your success in this class. Mastering concepts is not an easy process. Practicing problems is essential. Following along in class is not the same as doing it yourself. Working with other students is very helpful, but copying will not be accepted. It is imperative you submit your own work.
If you struggle with an assignment request help during class-independent practice, and also you may request of extra time to turn-in work, but this must be turned-in before the progress report or report card dates. And do not forget that may be points off for the grades of late assignments
If by a good reason you miss a test, teacher must be notified as soon as possible to program a new extra class test (usually during tutorials time), to get the corresponding grade.
Tutorials
Tutorials initially will be available on Wednesdays from 2:50 to 4:00. Any modification to this schedule will be announced during class. Tutorials in a different day or hour will be available by previous appointment.
On-line tutorials are available at Google Classroom. These are videos uploaded for every lesson, so it is important you verify you have access to this platform.
