Course Description
This course is designed to broaden your understanding of advanced functions, expand algebraic reasoning, and prepare you for higher-level math like Precalculus and Statistics. It fulfills High School graduation requirements under the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) frame, and linking math concepts and data models to real-world applications. The course will cover the next topics:
Unit 0. Numbers and Operations. Students will review the Basic Skills & Concepts for working with expressions.
Unit 1. Equations and Inequalities. Introduces foundational algebraic concepts, including simplifying and evaluating algebraic expressions, solving linear and absolute value equations, and solving and graphing inequalities, which are essential for understanding more advanced topics
Unit 2. Linear Relations and Functions. Focus on linear relationships and functions, emphasizing using equations of relations and functions, determining the slope of a line, using scatter plot and prediction equations, and graphing linear inequalities
Unit 3. Systems of Equations and Inequalities. Build on linear concepts by introducing systems, requiring students to solve systems of linear equations and linear inequalities, solve problems using linear programming, and perform operations with matrices and determinants
Unit 4. Quadratic Functions and Relations. Explore quadratic functions, including graphing quadratic functions, solving quadratic equations, performing operations with complex numbers, and graphing and solving quadratic inequalities
Unit 5. Polynomials and Polynomial Functions. Introduces higher-degree polynomials, emphasizing adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and factoring polynomials, analyzing and graphing polynomial functions, evaluating polynomial functions and solving polynomial equations, and finding factors and zeros of polynomial functions
Unit 6. Inverse and Radical Functions and Relations. Focuses on finding the composition and inverses of functions, graphing and analyzing square root functions and inequalities, and simplifying and solving equations involving roots, radicals, and rational exponents.
Unit 7. Exponential and Logarithmic Functions and Relations. Explores graphing exponential and logarithmic functions, solving exponential and logarithmic equations and inequalities, and solving problems involving exponential growth and decay.
Unit 8. Rational Functions and Relations. Examines simplifying rational expressions, graphing rational functions, solving direct, joint, and inverse variation problems, and solving rational equations and inequalities
Scope and Sequence
This year, Galena Park High School officially transitions to the 5 X 5 accelerated schedule, creating exciting new opportunities for you. This schedule will provide greater flexibility while allowing you to accelerate your learning, recover credits when needed, and pursue additional coursework aligned with your college and career goals.
Most importantly, it gives an opportunity to personalize your learning and ensure you have the support you need to succeed.
So all above topics will be covered in one semester on a daily class base, about 80 minutes long, giving you the opportunity to take a different class at this same period during the other semester. The planned sequence of this course is shown below:
A: 90% ≤ score
B: 80% ≤ score < 90%
C: 75% ≤ score < 80%
D: 70% ≤ score < 75%
F: score < 70%
The high school semester schedule follows a six-weeks grading period rather than a nine-weeks layout.
The exact weight of each individual six-weeks grading block toward your final semester average is calculated as follows:
1st Six Weeks Grade: 28%
2nd Six Weeks Grade: 28%
3rd Six Weeks Grade: 29%
Semester Final Exam: 15%
Final Exams are mandatory, and are an opportunity to improve your final grade. These exams will include all the subjects covered during the semester, but tests could have more emphasis on the last chapters, if these chapters are considered important. A request for a make-up final exam should be done to me and will be programmed extra class.
Alternatively, a Major Project can be given at the end of the semester, and these projects will be equivalent to a final test grade. The due date for these projects is the corresponding final test day.
Work Ethics and Make-Up Work
Assignments are expected to be completed on time. These are an important part of your grade. Consistent progress in your assignments is imperative to your success in this class. Mastering concepts is not an easy process. Practicing problems is essential. Following along in class is not the same as doing it yourself. Working with other students is very helpful, but copying will not be accepted. It is imperative you submit your own work.
If you struggle with an assignment request help during class-independent practice, and also you may request of extra time to turn-in work, but this must be turned-in before the progress report or report card dates.
If by a good reason you miss a test, teacher must be notified as soon as possible to program a new extra class test (usually during tutorials time), to get the corresponding grade.
Tutorials
Tutorials initially will be available on Wednesdays from 2:50 to 4:00. Any modification to this schedule will be announced during class. Tutorials in a different day or hour will be available by previous appointment.
On-line tutorials are available at Google Classroom. These are videos uploaded for every lesson.. so is important you verify to have access to this platform.
