We believe we can foster a literacy learning culture that is strategically aimed at improving student achievement by providing quality programs and improved literacy instruction to ensure all students are able to read, listen, view, speak, write and represent effectively and with confidence.
~ adapted from "Paying Attention to Literacy"
We recognize that we have students in our secondary school classrooms who continue to struggle with reading (decoding and comprehension). The aim of this program is to help teachers learn to more effectively use diagnostic assessments, analyze this data, and provide students with guided instruction to improve their literacy skills.
All TVDSB secondary schools have now been given the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System and a Leveled Literacy Intervention Program Kit (either Red or Purple for most schools).
The Benchmark Assessment System uses reading records to analyse students' miscues, fluency, and errors.
The Leveled Literacy Intervention System then targets those gaps using small group instruction.
The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System (LLI) is an intensive, small-group, supplementary literacy intervention for students who find reading and writing difficult. The goal of LLI is to lift the literacy achievement of students who are not achieving grade-level expectations in reading. The LLIsystems are designed to:
Advance the literacy learning of students not meeting grade-level expectations in reading
Deepen and expand comprehension with close reading
Elevate the expertise of teachers
Increase reading volume by engaging students in large amounts of successful daily reading
Increase student engagement with books that build knowledge
Intervene with small groups of struggling readers to maximize growth
Meet the needs of struggling readers
Monitor student progress.
